For the Model Railroad Crew - Direct from Scenic Utah!

I know there are several model railroaders in our ranks. Here are some shots from the Heber Valley Historical Railroad that I visited while vacationing in Utah last week.

Check out the shirt I'm wearing! ;)

Bill, looks like fun. I love the shirt, did you get any comments? I was wearing mine once and a lady in the liquor store asked me if that were legal? ;D

Hope you had a relaxing time away from it all.

There must be a lot of "Reefers" in Utah because I didn't get a single comment!

I wore the maroon shirt on the flight out, and Cindy wore hers on another day.

NJRC must be a household name throughout the land. ;D

Great shots Bill. I was into model railroading too. That is of course until I got into reef tanks. Couldn't afford both hobbies so I sold all my HO stuff to a local railroad club.

Man I we miss Utah. The local club is a nice one. They had a meeting while you were there. Too bad you weren't able to check it out. Oh well, here's their site. http://www.utahreefs.com/

Too bad! But I may be going back again next year. Instead of the meeting I was sitting in Wasatch Brewery drinking Polygamy Porter and Devastator Double Bock!

Thanks for the link.

Well if I could edit I would have also added that the reef tour they put on annually is neat. Club members voluntarily hold a parade of homes style open house to the local community.

That porter is some good stuff. My wife's grandparents came out one summer while we were still living out there. It was the first time they were on an airplane. We took them up to Snowbird and they were able to experience snow for the first time.

If I might, here's some photos from the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad we visited this spring. It was never run as an actual railroad in historical times, buit was a labor of love by a guy who built it in untouched forest so people could see what a logging railroad was like. The engine is a Shay, kind of the 4-wheel-drive of locomotives.

Up though the woods!

It goes up a very steep mountainside. It used to loop up until the trestle burned in the '70's, now there's a switchback. Lots of huge redwoods and hemlocks.

Very Cool Jim!

Thanks for the pictures.

Anyone ever go to Steamtown in Scranton, PA?

They have a huge collection. I'd love to get there someday.

We did go to Steamtown a couple of times. It's worth the trip. "Bigboy" is amazing in person, but I didn't see it running. If you go to Scranton, a stop at Coopers for a seafood dinner is a must. That place is one of a kind, plus they have over 100 beers.

I have what you might call a mild interest in trains. I like them but I'm not a foamer. Always wanted a train set, but it's a little late at this point! I guess reefs are my train set (oooo, that's deep!)

When my older son was young, he was a certified Thomas the Tank Engine Freak, and we did many, many train-related things as a result, including "day out with Thomas" at Steamtown, at the Strasburg Railroad in PA, the Trolley Museum in Maine, and the Essex Junction railroad in CT, all worth the trip.

Pretty scary thought, but I've spent a lot of time on train sites lately.

When the 180 goes up and if I retire everything else but the 55, I've found room for a 10'x10' layout.

I've actually made a first cut track plan for it!

Bill dont do it. Youll be choo chooing all over. Then your gonna have to buy some o- gage stuff from my pops. He just did a submarine car with a clownfish on it.

Actually this is good anyone wanna trade repalcement train parts for frags and equipment.

Not to worry Barry. I won't be neglecting my reef and I also won't be going "O" its just too big.

I'll be sticking with my "S" gauge. Of course Mongoose has been trying to drag me over to the "N" gauge side of the fence. :)

Okay, so, hear me out, drill a couple 2" bulkheads into opposite sides of the tank, and, and, run a piece of clear PVC between the bulkheads, okay, ya with me, and see, then, run the train track through the pipe, and bang, it's a train tunnel through the reef, I mean, would that be amazing or what??

That would be so cool...even better if you hook a little wireless webcam to the train - then you could see your reef tank from "within"!

then pray that the bulkhead doesn't fail

Pretty amazing! Let me know how it works out. You supply the reef and tunnel and I'll fix you up with a train. ;) Got to measure first because 2" is a little tight for "S". Can we go 3"?
