Garf Grunge

so, i think its now safe to tell my story.......
A few months back i had a bad crash in my nano. all my polyps were melting away and whatever didnt die completely totally stopped growing. I was at a loss as to what my problem was, all my levels were well within acceptable range. One thing that i did notice was that all of my little sand dwelling organisms (mini brittle stars, scud shrimp, peanut worms, bristles) totally dissappeared. i found this garf grunge stuff online. basically its fine live rock rubble full of life. its been about 3 months now since i have added it and my tank has never looked better, and the amount of sand critters living amongst this stuff is unreal. anyone looking to diversify their sandbed critters and bacteria i recomend getting a few pounds of this stuff. worked like a charm for me!

Re: Graf Grunge

i have a 24 nano. got 6 pounds and spread it in the display. have about 1.5" of the grunge on top of about 3.5" live sand

Re: Graf Grunge

it looks like about pea to small pebble sized lr pieces, with lots of shells mixed in. many pieces have alot of coraline on it, thats another thing i forgot to mention was how my coraline exploded a month after i added this stuff. also has alot of rock dust that comes with it. it will cloud your tank up something nasty for about 24 hours after you add it, but settles right down.

yeah im retarded.. mods- can you change the post title to garf grunge, not graf

done. Can i tell you though that I read it as you intended GARF...not graf. Scary how messed up my mind is. lol.

Hmm I was just looking at this stuff yesterday to. How much did shipping run ya? I only need a pound so I just don't think w/ shipping it would be worth it for me.

I like the idea for the pods and the coraline is a nice bonus but I don't want to put those big pieces over my sand. Might try a bottle of pods

Sounds like you can get the same thing from free samples of live sand from the sumps of a established members tanks. The Coraline can be seeded the same way, using a small rock that is encrusted and scraping it off into the tank. Iv done this for a dozen friends tanks and it always helps to jump start things along.

PATIENCE IS PARMOUNT IN THIS HOBBY...

well.. that and you can look back a few pages, i made a post for sand critters like brittle stars and fan worms and such and would you like to know how many people got back to me? give ya a hint..it was not +1, it was ZERO.....soooo due to noone wanting to help a nubie at the moment i ordered it, and worked out great.+2

looking for something to seed my sandbed/ liverock. I was told by a lfs there was something you could get shipped called bag of bugs, or something like that that consisted of pods, peanut worms, things like that. Anyone know where to get it? or anyone know where i can just get that stuff ? also looking for micro featherdusters... my tank got none of this stuff!

Just found this, after reading your posts, ALOT of persons have replied to your posts,
give ya a hint..it was not +1, it was ZERO.....soooo due to noone wanting to help a nubie
Nobody has micro fauna that can be culled out, but ask for live sand or cheato and many will respond, perhaps the way it was worded?

unfortunately my sand bed has nothing but bacteria. A few years ago if you asked me - I would have been happy to pass along sand bed with mini-stars, amphipod, copepods etc. But that was hardly "sand" - it was borderline crushed coral. I got it from TampaBay Saltwater. Great stuff - and really "live". I just wanted something different for this tank.

That's the rub really - crushed coral/shells etc is great for providing a venue for pods/stars etc. to live - but it is not all that pretty.

Glad to hear garf worked for you. I really hate that website though. I dunno what it is - maybe people in Idaho don't care about good web design?

so tell us where you purchased it in case one of us wants to get it.
Dave - GARF grunge is from garf. The geothermal bla bla bla group. Sorry the acronmyn eludes me. I think calaxa started a thread about them a while back.

i think its garf.com..or .org. really dunno. but i know that microfauna cannot be separated from the sand, thats why i worded it the way i did... also not saying that noone on here is helpful, i have met a bunch of people from here that have been more than helpful just so happens that noone did with that... but yeah, it worked good for me and would recomend it if anyone wanted to get some critters
