GFO Question - Rowaphos exhausted?

So I have never run GFO on my tank. I started running rowaphos in a rector 4 days ago.

It was tumbling nicely and flow was OK. Tonight 1 noticed that there was minimal tumbling and the flow was a bit faster.

I did some research and found out that it is a sign that GFO is exhausted and needs to be replaced.

Is this true? Can you GFO heavy weights chime in please?

When you reply please state which kind of media you run.

Thanks
Sunny

We use two little fishes phosban and as soon as the movement slows and looks a little clumpy that is when we change ours. Usually it gets changed within 2 to 3 months

I'm using the BRS HC GFO in one of their reactor's, with an MJ600 pump. I replace it when my PO4 gets to about .05 on a Hanna meter, and my Purple NaNa starts getting a little tan at its base, about every two month's. I use the prefilters on both the GAC and GFO pumps, to help keep the internal sponges from getting clogged.

I change it out monthly with my carbon maintenance. I use a MJ600 pump daisy chaining 2x TFL reactors. First water past through the GFO then to the Carbon chamber.

Jim:
Just curious, why is the purple Nana the barometer? Something unique that makes it more sensitive? or is that just your experience?

There are certain corals people have had for a long time that just become a canary in the coal mine. If you read a lot of the TOTM winners on RC, most of them will say they can just look at their tanks and know a parameter is off.

That about sums it up. The Purple NaNa has a very purple tip going down to a white area, before turning tan toward the bottom. When I see the white area starting to turn tan, I know that my PO4 is on the rise, and it's near time to replace the GFO.
