good camera

hello all i am a senior in highschool and i am in photography class. i'd like to get a nice camera. i plan to do so after x mass because i'll have money then. my teacher recomends the nikon D40X. seems cool, but a little too pricey for me. now i have found them on ebay for around 250ish. but i kinda want a warrenty and i am weary abou tbuying one over ebay with out one. bow if someone on here had one for that price i would most likely do it. but what is a good camera, i want to be able to take high speed images and i want to be able to control as much as possiable and throw it in auto mode wen i get lazy. also if anyone has a camera they would sell me that might fit my needs, LMK. thanks in advance

D40 is a good camera and the lenses you get will grow with you for when you're ready for the D300 (or 400, if that's what it is by then)! You can get one on B&H Photovideo with a couple of lenses too. The one thing that will control the "high speed images" more than the body you get is the lenses you get to go with it.

check on the friday sales.. i saw the d40 and 2 lenses for real cheap somewhere.. can't remember where... circuit city maybe..

Check the "Used Equipment" at B&H or Adorama. These are two most reputable stores of photo equipment in NYC. They have plenty of various used equpment, and if you have set your hart on Nikon check these:

http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=itemlist&cat1=Used&cat2=Nikon Digital&cat3=Cameras

Check Canon as well ( ;D I am a Canon guy ), since they give nice deals.

The advantage of those two places is that you can check the stuff online and then go and see it in person, play with it, and then decide wether or not to buy it or not. If you decide to buy it, buy it there "online" which means you pay the shipment to NJ but save on sales tax.

That first link is to the D40, rather than the D40X. The (subtle, and possibly not necessary) difference is that the D40X is a 10mp camera over the 40 which is a 6mp cam. Good prices for a great entry level camera (by the time you need 10mp, you're going to want the flexibility, sturdiness and function of a D200+).

Be careful with online photo equipment retailers. Famous for the often useless upsell. Here's a review on 1wayphoto. BHphotovideo is one of my FAVORITE places to purchase equipment.

nikon-cannon, doesnt really matter to me, i just want a nice camera. i was just mentioned the D40X because that is what was recomended by my teacher. what would you reccomend? i want to be able to take high speed pictures, pictures of friends, and of corse pictures of the fishies and corals :). i also dont want to be spending an arm and a leg, used doesnt matter. i will probably get used b/c i only want to spend 400 tops. thanks

I'd go with Nikon or Canon before I went with anything else. If you're getting into DSLR you're making an investment of a lifetime. The lenses you buy now will grow with you as your body (the cheapest part of owning a DSLR, IME) upgrades. You want to buy into the best system you can NOW. I'd get a Nikon D40 (6mp is fine) and one lens.

But that's just me...

The good thing about your old SLR equipment, is most of it is still good! You can still use it on your digi cam if you stay with the same system (for the most part). You may not WANT to... but you can!

I have had my D70 for a few years now, still loving it and see no reason to upgrade 6MP is more than enough.

Wish that were true for all the old Konica lenses I have, including a macro! ::)
