Was reading on a site about adding a tsp of yogurt to tank to add good bacteria. Did you ever hear of this? Others were saying they saw a overall difference.

I’m assuming they are talking about supplying probiotic bacteria found in yogurt. Dosing probiotic bacteria (bacteria only) has been studied for years, both as a food additive to assist in the digestive tracts of your fish, and as a water supplement to out compete the bad bacteria. These are specific types of bacteria that are used. The issue with using yogurt is that the bacteria found in yogurt will not survive in saltwater….they are freshwater bacteria. That said, the potential benefit of dosing yogurt could be as a carbon source for the already present bacteria to grow and flourish.

so what you're saying is yoplait in my mixed reef good idea?

Some of the additions to tanks scare me. Don't get me wrong I've done dosing for certain things like hydrogen peroxide but yogurt is a new one for me.

So if using probiotic bacteria, then you would use products like Dr Tim's Eco Balance Probiotic Bacteria, Pro Bio F, Pro Bio S, and Growth Hack is a unique blend of probiotics?

Yes, but.....if you believe....

Again two ways of using probiotics....one is as a tank treatment and the other is food additive for fish intestine health.

For tank treatment, what is believed is that the "Good" probiotic bacteria out-compete the bad bacteria, keeping the neighborhood a happy and safe place.

For food additive, first off many fish foods come with probiotics already added...read the label, you might be surprised. In addition, you can purchase products to fortify your food with probiotic bacteria, which then do their thing in the fish intestines.

So I'm not familiar with all the products you mentioned, but believe some, like Dr. Tim's is a tank treatment product, and I believe the Growth Hack product is a food additive product.
