Green Star Polyp Not Opening

I put a green star polyp in my tank on saturday(5 days ago) and on sunday and monday half of the polyps were open and now none of them open up. on the half that had opened up i can see the tips of them but that's it. currently they are under VHO bulbs in a moderate to high flow area. i got them from a friend's tank where they were doing fine. they were under 175 watt MH in his tank.

Are they still adjusting to my tank and that's why they aren't opening or is something wrong? i worried because they were opening and now they aren't.

all my levels seem to be in check the only one that's a little high is the nitrate which is around 20.

I've found my GSP's to very "shy" too. If I do anything to disturb them, they close up and stay that way for a lot longer than anything else in the tank. I'm not sure they've ever gone 5 days, but I do know that they take longer than most to open up (in my system, anyway).

What is your Magnesium? Our Red star polyps tend to "go away" when the mag is low.

Mine can be shy as well. Makes sense since they use to live with Phyl and John!

I never thought about the mag. My mag drops, I'll have to watch and see if the cycles match.

Magnesium: 1140
Phosphate: 0
dKH: 10.8
Alk: 3.89
calcium: 425
nitrate: 25
nitrite: .05
salinity: 1.025

The only other thing i noticed was that there seems to be some diatoms growing everywhere in my tank, still, even on the green star polyps. I read that the diatoms can cause them to retract is this true? i also read that if diatoms start to form on them to scrub them off with a toothbrush??? should i try this?

we got some from rich and it took awhile for them to open but their doing great time time time guess thats what it takes

You want that mag number closer to 1300. Give that a try and see if they don't open back up again. If you can't blow the dust off of the GSP then a light swipe with the toothbrush shouldn't make things worse. I wouldn't be too rough.

It is depleted along with other nutrients in your tank. I bought my Mag suppliment from the same company that makes b-ionic 2 part.
