I think this ruling is bittersweet, In a way i am in favor of this, and in another im against it.
In favor because i feel that certain fish, should be left in the ocean and this will push for more captive breeding in out hobby, which should decrease in the home aquarium mortality rate
Against because the ruling, IMO doesn't really do much but affect wholesale establishments, and doesn't regulate any spear fishing or have a licensing requirements for it....There are also bigger issues that will need to be addressed like Global Warming and Pollution
I had herd about this in the past and in talks with others had discussed the fact that alot of our corals and fish come from the ocean directly and not many are actually aqua-cultured or sustain-ably breed and farmed for sale in the trade. I guess in part the reason is that some of the fish we keep especially the bigger ones require alot of space to go threw the process of spawning like they would in the wild and considering its is an already difficult task to provide the proper conditions for the fish we keep most larger companies focus only on the few species that are small have less requirements and spawn easily in large numbers. So in short its easier for people to harvest the fish straight from the wild and unfortunately even with restrictions in place shady people looking to make a quick buck will break the rules and take and take until there isn't anything left. I saw a documentary awhile back about the aquarium fish trade and were the fish come from, now granted in this video the fish were tropical fresh water but the premise is the same, basically the idea is this Fish are a product that has no purchase cost they are found in the wild and you dont have to pay nature to take them sure it costs money to plan a fishing trip but realistically unlike common house hold items were the store purchase the merchandise at a cost and then sells at a higher cost to make a profit, fish dont have a purchase cost for the dealer, so these guys go out and scoop up huge numbers to increase there profits with no regard for the impact it has on the eco system or the future of the species of fish.. quick profits equal people willing to take advantage of the system
