healthy ferret?

My girlfriend wants a ferret or "her own" tank. ::) I am going with the ferret because If I say ok to a tank I will be forced to take care of it and I am not THAT stupid. ;) I am already busy with her 6yr old sons tank and my own. I had 3 ferrets growing up and informed her about the care SHE will have to provide and she agreed to take care of it herself. The big question is.. Does anyone know of a semi-local place to get a healthy ferret? I am in forked river, exit 74 off the pkwy.I know they sell them around here but i refuse to buy from those places. I want to buy her a healthy one! THANKS IN ADVANCE... Chad

I used to have a bunch of ferrets...and occasionally I actually miss them! I don't know how much you've researched them, but you will need to ferret proof the house (or room) they can squeeze themselves into area's you didn't think possible. (Under refrigerators, ovens, doors)

Make sure she has plenty of time to spend with it and let it run around...their temperament can change for the worse if they are bored and lonely! (just like people I guess!)

I bought mine from a bunch of different places...Try and get a Marshall's ferret if possible (I believe they have 2 blue dots on their ears to identify if it is indeed a Marshall's) or a breeder.

Good luck!

So true about spending time with them and ferret proof the house ours used to get into everything LOL they love shiney things if you left your ring on the end table it would be gone and hidden under the couch LOL

I've never had a ferret but an alternative would be to pick one up at a shelter.

http://petfinder.com/

I located a guinea pig shelter and went with my family to "rescue" a pair.

I noticed they also have ferret listings for other shelters. Just type in ferret in the search bar and your zip and it'll direct you to the nearest shelter. Who knows maybe someone is foster sitting a ferret right in your neighborhood.

Good luck! I have a feeling though you'll be like me...taking care of the fish and any other pet.

i have 2... bonnie and clyde... ferrets are very social, so if and most of the expense is the cage and accessories, if you're shelling it out.. you really should buy 2.... they will be so much happier... and doesn't take up any additional room

hey chad, ferrets now huh? are you trying to become a zoo like me?...lol.
shelters do occasionally get them so check them. they are cool pets, they will actually fetch like a dog and play chase with you. NOTE..their poop smells very strong and you will have to keep up with it ASAP or your house will smell. if you wanna go with a snake, let me know... ;D

And the males (IME)mark everything by dragging their privates over it, (like my shoes). If I ever did it again, I would get a descented femal only. Plus when I had a ferret it ate a pet bird I had, OK, it ate the head, which was the part it could pull through the bars. I'm just sayin'.

sorry to hear that jim.. :(

Chad, how about a pet skunk instead? I'm being dead serious. They are legal here in Jersey. Of course they are descented. I did some research on them a while back, and they're supposed to make better pets than ferrets. ;D ;D ;D

My brother had a pet skunk years ago..it was freaking awesome. Very friendly, litter trained and still thought it had it scent sacs for awhile. When it got scared it would try and spray you (when it was young) It would turn around and try and spray..and then look back at you like "Why are you still here!?" lol

I think you can get them in other colors than the traditional black-and-white, I've seen cinnamon color. The main issues with skunks seem to be:
1) They have no idea when they've had enough to eat, you have to weigh their food or you end up with a really fat unhealthy skunk. I saw a skunk at a zoo that looked like a throw pillow.
2) They have some hard-to-control digging behaviors, some people have had their linoleum dug up.

I always wanted one, we raised a baby we found wandering but it ran away once it got big enough.

Hey chad, i have a healthy white female spayed ferret named Ruby that i am going to sell. She comes with her cage & accessories. She is friendly, good with kids & animals. If interested let me know.
