Help!!!!!!

i just went down into the basement for the first time today to check on my tank for some unknown reason the tank is looks like milk! i cannot see 6 inches into the tank. everything appears to have what looks like cob webs all over it. i have no idea what happened. i tested the PH and it is at 8.7 i can see my two true percs are still alive but i havent been able to see my anthias. i do have 2 condy nem's in the tank, my first thought was maybe one of them got caught in a power head, which would be unlikely b/c neither has moved a bit since they were put into the tank, but i can see both of them are still in the same spot. i had about 30 gallons of RO/DI at the ready, which i currently mixing with salt, but that is not much water considering the tank/sump/fuge add up to about 250. any thoughts??? i need some advice!!

8.7 is pretty high but maybe not fatal. It sounds like the calcium is precipitating but that is just a guess. Any way kalk unknowingly got dosed? I'd try to figure a way to get the ph down. If you have a calcium reactor with CO2, maybe you can inject the CO2 into the skimmer to bring down the ph. I'd get a second opinion on doing it that way though. I'm just thinking out loud.

I do not have a have a calcium reactor reactor. i did add more kalk to my kal reactor yesterday, i think that may have been the cause. hopefully this water change will help.

Sounds like rich is right. I would do that 30 gallon change, test the water again, if need be do another change. If you need water fast AO sells RO for 50cents a gallon. Maybe you can fill up 20gallons in 4 5g buckets.

i found what the problem was. the drip flow regulator at the end of the kalk reactor came off, so the instead of the kalkwasser dripping into the tank it pretty came in on a steady stream. i did the 40g water change and the ph is down to 8.51 i am going to fill the RO reservoir again and do another water change in the morning if the ph doesnt drop. i hope the anthias are ok. i turned the lights off for the day, i guess its just a shady day at the reef.

PH now at 8.25

no casualties thus far. anthias and clowns are accounted for. everything has a white coding over it. some of the star polyps are out and some are not, water is much more clear, but far from back to normal. hopefully things will look better tomorrow.

I'm sure it's happened to a few of us out there... you're not the first. Good luck with everything, glad to hear no casualties.

Kalk over doses are common accident, but generally never fatal, its the over reaction that makes it worse. Generally all you have to do is stop adding anything and it will come down all by itself. The parcipitate will dissolve by itself. PH will drop withing a few hours.
