HOB Overflow?

I have 3 hang on back overflow boxes on a 125. I am tired of cleaning out the u-tubes each month to keep them flowing properly and was wondering if anyone has come across the same problem. I know having a RR tank would more than solve my problem but at the current time I don't wan't to spend the money or go through the process of switching tanks. As the month goes on in between my cleanings my overflows drain less and less water to the point where I have to throttle down my return pump. I see algea build up in the clear u-tube and everything is fine again after I clean it out. Has anyone found dark U-tubes or another material to use for a u-tube to stop the build up?

how about a bigger u-tube?
or may be post some pictures, we probably would be able to come up with some creative way(s) to overcome this issue... ;D

Shot in the dark here but try wraping in in something dark. First thing that comes to mind is 3% limo tint. Can also make psudo u-tubes from PVC which should fix the issue.

I thought of a bigger u-tube since drainage wouldn't be an issue as well as trying to block off the light from hitting it. Both sound like excellent suggestions. Wanted to see if anyone outthere has dealt with the same problem. It was never an issue untill I upgraded my lighting and built a custom hood to fit the retro fit. The lighting use to be about 2" off the water and now lies about 8" above the surface allowing more light to hit the overflow area's. Thanks for the suggestions and I'll have to think about my best solution.
