How do I know if my Zoos are too close to the lights?

Ive read that theyll stretch if too far away, but whaqt about too close? Bleaching? Im running a 24 nanocube with 72w PC, 36w of 10k, and 36w of actinik.(sp?) Right now my mushroom and zoo are about 6-8 inches below the surface of the water. Recently moved so not all are open yet. Thanks

I have read a few posts on this and it seems that lower down from the lights seems to be generally better for them. Moving them closer or further from the lights may be a trial and error process, with each colony, with observation on how they react.
From what I am observing with my colony's and frags is that they all prefer PC lighting over my T-5 lighting. I have even started to shorten the time that the PCs are on to see how that effects them. One sure example is that my "mellow yellows" very light colored zoos, are doing much better being in a shaded area under PCs.
I would definitely like to hear others opinions on this.

Mine are on Reef plugs and colony rocks so are easy to move, if yours have spread on to your tanks live rock or were mounted by glue then that makes it more difficult.
Re landscaping the tanks LR can be done but can turn into a major job.

Theyve only been there since Sunday, not all of the polyps are open yet, but most are. It seems as though it found itself a better position, I didnt leave it in the direction of where it is now.

Do not understand, colony rocks do not move and the zoo polips are atached to the rock, perhaps the rock just settled or was pushed a bit by current like from a power head?

Yeah, the rock mustve fallen backwards, I moved it lower and more central so it can spread out. Most of the polyps receded from me touching it I guess. Its got around 1 ft now.

Thanks alot for your help, patience is a virtue! I swear I spend like 3 hours a day just staring and they never get any bigger!!!

Ive been addicted since my friend put the thought of him selling his nano...I swore I was fresh only! I want corals more than fish, but I think Im limited by the 72w total PC. Im trying to DIY another bulb or 2 in, well see.

Zoas are generally ok almost anywhere in the tank (with PC lighting), but if they aren't open for days at a time, they may need to be moved to lower lighting or something else may be wrong.

I believe you just started the tank a couple of weeks ago, so you may want to slow down and avoid adding any more corals until you make sure that the tank is settled. It may not be a lighting issue. Also, (I'm usually bad about this) keep your hands out of the tank! I know it's hard to do, and I always want to rearrange, but the more hands off you are, the more the corals will acclimate to their location and give you the growth and color you want. Find a place for them and leave them alone unless you have to make changes.

Another thing to keep in mind with zoas is that they contain a powerful toxin. Anytime you handle zoas, make sure you wash your hands well before putting them near your face.

Yea, I have been rushing it a little. Hard to control myself though, everything in a salt tank is sooo much nicer than fresh! I read the posts on Zoa toxin, pretty crazy stuff! I dont know who it was but someone mentioned contacts, and they went blind for a little, very scary! I hate not being able to see when I wake up w/o contacts in, imagine never again! I appreciate your input, I will try to control myself more haha. Im done moving stuff around for a while. You can see all of the stuff that comes off of your hands when you put them in the tank.

put a small part under a rock or a cave and see if it opens..if that half thats in the cave opens..then it prefers a dimmer area..hope this helps..

I have zoas under T5's like said earlier try to move them around and see where you get best results, if you can frag it into 2 pieces. I prefer having them at the bottom where they grow really tight and close to rock, plug or whatever is on. When I move mine near the top it seems like they start to spread out and the polyps start to get longer.

I find that the light color zoas like a lot of light.(up top)Dark ones like less light.(down low)I put all new frags low and move up slowly.(over a few days/weeks).The less moving the better. I also find zoas like some flow.(not direct though)
