How do i prevent an overflow?

This is a question that's been bugging me for a while.

When the power to the return pump is turned off I have to suck the air out of that U bend to get the flow going again. I'm concerned that if I have a brief power loss when I'm not home that I'll end up over flowing the DT, and potentially a burning up the return pump. Electrically there must be a way to keep power from kicking back on after an outage, yes??

You can hook up a aqua lifter to the u tube to suck the air out. Or put your pump on a UPS.

The U-tube shouldn't lose siphon when the return is shut down. Sorry, that wasn't very helpful..

True with a hang on overflow, but if you're using a simple siphon to drain into a sump the u would lose its siphon. I'm thinking he is doing something like this.

If you can't fix the suction problem, you can get a power strip/box that has a starter on it, so the button has to be held down to turn it on. It won't go on automatically after the power feed to it is turned off.

You can get a controller- my newly acquired reef angel will shut off my return pump if the waterlevel in my display is too high.
