How much to feed your fish?

Just wondering if there is a general rule of how much to feed your fish? I heard stuff like ... give them enough food that equals to the size of their eye. Is there any science behind it at all? Somethin like a 1/4 teaspoon for a 4" tang , any measure for it?

From reading and talking to others you should feed your fish the amount that they can finish in 2 minutes. The way I figured out the best is to feed a small portion of flakes if they finish that fast then add a little more, but less than first and if they finish all that proceed.

At the moment I feed mine about 3 small pinches of flakes. I don't crunch the flakes, but leave them whole then the fish bite them and eat what they want. Once the fish start eating the food and spitting it out then they are fed enough. The benefit of leaving it as flakes is that what they spit out I scoop up with a net or I leave to fall to my sand bed where my shrimp or snails go wild for it.

I have 1 cleaner shrimp, 2 clowns false percs, and about a dozen or so snails and a scarlet hermit. (The blue hermit went to my cousin HE SUCKED).

GL and YMMV.

Never heard the "as much as their eye" thing. I'd think their stomach is bigger than their eye, no? LOL!

Anyway, generally, the rule of thumb is what they will eat in 2 to 3 minutes. But I think each "fish keeper" gets the feel for their own fish over time. For instance, I have a blue spot nasso tang, and I know there is no way that hog is full after 2 to 3 minutes! Especially with the clowns and the dotty back chasing down the food too.

Generally feeding my 90 takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and I feed slowly, until I see more falling away then getting ravenously chased down and swallowed. Once I hit that point, I turn the pumps back on and let the rest blow around for the cleanup crew and the corals.

Just my personal experience.

Alot.. a decent amount falls to the sand but once the Vortech kicks back on it goes into the water column again.. I have a decent amount of fish and lots of shrimp/crabs too though

I feed 2-3 times a day like others i heard and read what will get eatin in 2-3mins now that i was laid off its 3 times i feed a bit when i wake up the afternoon and before the lights go out i have fat happy fish

I feed cyclopeeze and some small pellets once a day. As much as can be eaten in less than 2 minutes (the timer by which the pumps kick back on).

I will note that I use a turkey baster to get a pellet or two down to my pearly jawfish. New fish, not used to eating like the others quite yet and I am a "doting" fish owner... :)

do you guys turn off your powerheads when feeding?

With the Vortechs they have a feeding mode which they power down while you feed. I do this when I feed with the theory being it gives the fish a chance to grab it in the water column before it gets blown around. I used to not turn off the powerheads and it looks like it wasted a bunch of food.

My approach is to turn off the pumps every feeding. This helps broadcast feed around the tank. Corals, fish, inverts...

If I want to target feed, then I also turn off my powerhead.

the tunze 7096 also has the feed button. With the pumps on during feedin, food would get blown into LR and I believe I was feeding my verimitd snails instead of my fish.

i have to get all all my power heads on powerstrip so i can shut them all down at with the flip of one switch. i just know that starting and stopping isnt exactly good for koralia's. sometimes that decide to not start back up rigth away.

That, and sometimes they start going in the wrong direction. I have a K2 that does that once in a while.

I heard that also but I had mine on a timer every 4 hours and they worked just fine.

We had 2 Koaralia #2s on our tank previous and sometimes they need a "push" like the prop on an old airplane. First time it happened we thought we blew the pump.

Something to consider. Each outlet with its own switch.

Dave,

I think you posted this a while back. Thanks for the repost because I couldnt find it.

i would like to get a couple larger dj power strips to use for all my devices. maybe when i re-do my tank. for now, i just used a 6 outlet power strip for all 5 of the power heads in my tank so i can shut them all down with one with botton for feeding.

I feed a little bit of food 2-3 times a day. All my fish look very healthy. I use to only feed 1-2 times a day but my coral beauty nips too much for that. Found the more I split the food up during the day the happier the wole tank seems

I feed algae in an algae clip, but the rest of the food is set free to blow around the tank. I have a lot of LPS so feel that very little food goes to waste maybe doesn't feed fish but feeds something. Figure the ocean flows don't stop at feeding time so they can catch a dead mysis. ;D
Sorta fun watching the fish fly around the tank too.
