How's my refugium?

I just want to check in and see if there's anything bad growing in there. I don't have any snails in there because I'm worried about them escaping into the return area and getting into the pump. So algae grows rampant, I'm hoping that's okay. I'm thinking of adding a couple blue leg hermits to work on the algae, any thoughts? Thanks!

Looks pretty good to me... I see some nice pods or mysis on the glass. I would just try to keep the cyno under control... maybe a few blue legs wouldn't hurt. Can't you put some screen or something on the return so that the snails don't go inside?

Before you add anything or take anything remember if its growing in there it's not in your DT. I once had a good amount of cyano in my fuge, none in the DT. Got the idea to cleanup the fuge and I pulled it all. A few days later I had cyano in the display. I recovered but others haven't been able to.

refugiums, now you're speaking my language. first off, due a temperature check on the water in the refugium and the water in the display tank, away from any pumps and mid level top to bottom and post back.

also what type of return pump do you have, and is it submerged or external, and where is it relative to the refugium?

Temp in sump is 79 - just like display. The return pump is submerged, in the middle chamber of the sump. I can't remember the brand off hand.

I've got some cleaner crew arriving soon. So I'll plan on tossing a few crabs in there. Thanks

some microalgaes thrive at higher temperatures. in the winter if you're temp drops to 76 or so you should see a reduction. that's part of it. the other part of it is when the refugium is in the lowest part of the system, rather than mid level, there will be organics settling in it and create pockets of nitrates that will feed micros growing under the fuge lights. that's one reason to have a dedicated sump at the very bottom of the system, so the organics settle in the bottom but are not fruitful b/c there's an absence of light.

in either case, like another member also said, it looks pretty good and within parameters for a fuge.
