I was a member of the NJRC for one year and attended one event way back, must have been 03 or 04. After a long time with just a FW tank I just setup a jbj 29 hqi. Going to try and do a mixed reef. Just thought I'd say hello. I'd like to reapply as a member and contribute as much as I can.

Thanks! well the tank has been set up a little over couple months, I just let live rock sit in a 12 gallon eclipse for 2 weeks, then moved everything over to the cube, It's a 29 hqi Im testing 0 phosphates, 0 nitrates, 0 nitrites 0 ammo. I use the fluval phosphate remover and the jbj carbon. I took out the stock skimmer and added an aquac remora. I tried to add my old cpr refuge and it was too big. I think I'm going to do the aquaclear mod since there's not so much room. My temps have been ok but barely. it usually stays around 83 with the lights on and 80 with them off. I dose 10 drops of kent nano reef A&B daily and that's about it. I bought a birds nest frag from aquatic obsessions and a zoo/mushroom frag from trop and it's seeming to do well too. polyps are open on both. I keep saliniy at 34.5 ppt but it's just an instant ocean hydrometer. Thanks again for the welcome. I would have replied quicker but I guess I don't have reply notifications on.

do you mean 28 gal jbj? didn't know they made 29 gals! not trying to be a arse! i had this tank for a year. i felt that i had to mod the tank to finally accept its cons. try changing the return pumps to maxijet 1200s. try to raise the hood a little or try to get some sort of mounting legs and get a fan in there to control the heat, with a controller of some sort. RKL did the job for me! 83 is not bad, but my tank got to 86 in the summer with lights on for only 5 hours. have you looked into adding actinics into the hood? here's a pic of showing my ghetto attempts to raise the hood. at the end of the day i just cut some pieces of wood and placed them in the corner. it sucks bc after doing this all the light escaped and made my room look like a airport runway. unfortunately i took the tank down since my new landlord wouldn't allow a fish tank. i didn't want to stress my dad out for trying to maintain 2 tanks.

don't mind the pic of the dead acan i received from someone after poor shipping methods..if you look in the corner of the pic you can see what i did to control heat..bad part was evap! but, saved money on a chiller..

Yeah oops, it's a 28 :-\
I added the 4 fan azoo and now the temp is 79 with the lights on even later in the day. but yeah, i have to top off 2x as much FW, I haven't thought about adding actinics, but was thinking of going towards 20k when it's time to replace the hqi

20k looks great, i just put one on my 65 gal. i went with actinics on the nc for dawn/dusk effect. best decision i made with that tank.
