Hi All,

This is Damon's wife. He's been away on business, and is due to arrive home in 5 hours. Sometime between yesterday and today his anemone died, it's just a skeleton. I have NO knowledge of his hobby, but I do know that a dead creature in the tank could be bad news. What should I do?

Thanks!

Since you have no experience, the best thing to do is not to do anything and let him do whatever he deems necessary. The animal even might not be really dead, just looking dead, the system might have enough room to deal with it on its own and even if it doesn't, 5 hours won't make big difference. So, again, the best thing would be for you to leave it to him and maybe call him (if he is reachable) for advice. The worst thing happen in this hobby when correction measures are rushed making things much more worse.

If your sure it's dead take it out of the tank and throw it away. Just one thing anemones don't have skeletons, they are just a mass of flesh. If you're sure your looking at a hard skeleton it's not an anemone and you could probably just leave it alone.

OK... I found the Anemone it moved... BUT It killed something with a coral-like skeleton in it's path. The water is cloudy.

Thanks for the help!

Damon is unreachable at the moment. I just wanted to make sure nothing needed to get done urgently.

When anemone's "blow out" their water, they appear dead. They can look that way for a couple days. Let's hope that's the case.

Ok, now situation might be different.

ONE thing that YOU could do is to start getting RO/DI water that he will probably need. Changing water is a must in most situations, so you use this time untill he arrives to collect some additional water. I am assuming that he is using the RO/DI -reverse osmosis/deioniser unit to filter tap water into pure watr. If you know where and how he colect it, I would suggest it for you to start collecting it (these units produce clear water very slowly, and might take some time to cellect 5-10 gal). Make sure that you are collecting it into PROPER container, one that he would use. DO NOT add anything to the water and DO NOT add this water to anything until he comes back. Just collect it and let it aerate (it should sit awhile anyway before you use it)

Now, another thing that you could do is this. IF, and only if the anemone is still moving around, and there might be other corals in the path, try to put a net over it (I assume he has one). DO NOT pull it out of the water, or pull it to the surface or of the rocks. Just try to enclose it with the net so that it doesn't go over other corals. Just be very very very carefull not to entangle the net into other corals and damage them (I did that so many times). Do it slowly and carefully, no rush.
