I'm so confused on powerheads

I had some of the original vortech 40s when they came out. The noise drove me bonkers, but I had them turned up looking for max flow when I was going to go with sps. I took them out. Wetsides are shot and I'm thinking of tossing the controllers on the shelf.

Now that I'm going to focus on softies plus a nem or two, and will only have about 13 fish in the 120, I don't think I need the super high flow. I have an eheim 1262 as a return pump, so that gets me about 950gph. But I need to add some more flow.

So not to start a battle, but the new vortech 40qd or the gyre 130? I don't have an aqua controller as my LEDs are the marsaqua so they won't take one. So am not looking for any super complicated flow patterns, just something effective.

Which would you go with? Sorry if I stirred up a nest. Also, any local dealers give an NJReef discount on this stuff? Thanks

Are you stuck on these two? Why not consider a couple of jebao powerheads and save a few hundred.

Had a couple of Jebao 10s in a 40 breeder and they worked fantastically, nice as they come with the wavemaker controller and its pretty cool getting a programmable and powerful powerhead so affordably. Treated myself to a gyre 130 for a 4' shallow reef and have to keep it between 40-50% - anything over that starts blasting corals off rock. Jebaos make a small amount of buzz. The 130 is silent at 40 or 50%, it starts buzzing at 70 to 80% but at that power level it will strip concrete.

Thanks all. To be candid, most of what I'd heard about Jebaos was negative that you had to unplug and replug every few days. I'll check them out. Thanks.

Got it. Thanks for the feedback. Think I'll take the Jebao route because if they die quick, I can afford to replace several times and still be under the cost of a vortech.

I've been called a gyre fan boy. lol Coralvue is a club sponsor and has great customer support. They are the US distributor for Maxspect

Ed, you're being too hard on yourself. I'm not overly concerned about you being termed a "Gyre Fan Boy," but more concerned about your love life. I've been told that Jen doesn't want any more kids out of fear that you'll insist that the new baby be called Gyre.

Of course you're probably aware I had a four child....some call it a little mistake....but I call him Vortech.
