Instant Ocean.

I recently made a new batch of saltwater about 20gallons of RO/di water. sg: 1.023.

The water is showing extremely cloudy. I have no clue what else could have caused it besides the Instant Ocean bag I used.

oh yeah, there was recent threads about issues with Instant Ocean so that's why I am guessing that is the cause of everything.

How long did you let it mix ,it could still be disolving . Also 1.023 is a little low but would have nothing to do with the cloudy issue

I made 50 gallons of salt water a day ago and I was also woundering why was the water so cloudy. I hope there is nothing wrong. I just purchased 3 buckets.

i guess i better go buy some bags at the lfs b/c i know theyve been there for a while..

bad was purchased two weeks ago in prep for move. it was in buckets for 16-18 hours w/ph. it was cloudy before pouring bucket up until now. which is well over 24 hours but has shown some improvements. i've never had this problem before.

1.020 - 1.026 is normal and more people tend to say lower is better.

"closer to 1.020 for fish only, and closer to 1.026 for corals seems to be the general "rule of thumb"

good to know. i don't have any corals at this time. 1.023 fish w/live rock?

I have been running at 1.026 . I have fish/rock.coral . I think thats safe and gives a little room for evaporation .

so is there anyone out there that knows if Instant Ocean salt is actually tainted? I guess I'll be switching to another option.

When making the water are you letting it mix for 24 hours?. If you are just stirring it in, then yes it will be cloudy. If you are putting it in a bucket and putting a powerhead in it to mix it and aerate it, then it will be clear in a few hours, but it is considered good practice to let it aerate for 24 hours (when possible)

Also, if you are using a swing arm to measure the Salinity, then chances are you are higher than 1.023. You might want to invest in a refractometer and be right on the money. ($45 - $65, depending on the model)

Just want to say that my water has cleared up. I guess I will have to make my saltwater a few days in advance.

it took well over 36 hours to clear even after I poured it into my tank with a maxijet 1200 and 2 aquaclear 20ph. i know it's not extreme water movement but it's NEVER taken that much previously.
