Interesting Things I've Learned During the Holidays

With the holidays coming, we always get a crowd of non reef-keepers looking at our tanks and they teach me the most amazing things. For example:

1. Did you know that corals will die if you touch them with your bare hands?
2. If you watch acans and lobo's very closely, you can see them breathe.
3. The "rocks" are very colorful
4. Saltwater fish are almost impossible to keep

What gems have you heard?

We didn't have people over for Thanksgiving...but they will be coming tomorrow for Genevieve's bday party.

Things I've heard..

1. You're crazy
2. Those plants are really nice
3. Clams eat fish, don't they?

That's all I can remember right now...maybe tomorrow I'll have some more!

My favorites are:

"Seahorses don't really exist."
"Those things (corals) are real?"
"I didn't know nemo lived in fresh water."

Next family holiday we host is Christmas.

I'll remember to keep a pad by the tank to write the good ones down. ;)

Someone told me once (sagely!) that coral grows an inch every hundred years. I offered to show him my 1000-year-old acropora!

I only have one, but I think I'll remember it for the rest of my life:

"Did the trees in your tank lose their leaves because it's fall?" ::)

my favorites

1. How often do you have to paint those things (corals)
2. is there water in there
3. won't the fish eat each other

Interesting things I've learned and Heard during the holidays....

you have a starfish, you can keep those, i thought they were tropical?

what's that? what's that? how about that one, nah, that's not alive right?

why are they (corals) fuzzy and different colors? they are usually white last time i saw

That's cool! you have a tropical fish tank!

and the most common one before I added a bunch more fish- "how come you only have two fish?"

what do you guys usually do. try to explain the subtleties of each specie or just play along with the ignorance...

I usually try to explain things until I see their eyes glaze over then I just stop. I generally takes about two minutes . . .

i don't even bother, i just think of more absurtities until they give up... then offer to loan them one of the books from my shelf....lol
