A few weeks ago I posted about my trip to Jenkinsons aquarium and it's renovations. Then just a couple of days ago I saw a new post about it and saw a lot of comments about past meetings there and some of the clubs relationships with the place and it got me wondering if part of the clubs mission statement is conservation wouldn't it be 1 good advertising and 2 a great way to help educate people by sponsoring a reef tank there ? I know most of the staff there is part timer summer staff or volunteers but focusing on the full timers there do we have any strong connections were we could even volunteer sometime to help the place out? My son loves the place it's small but close by and the thought of a tank put together by the members here would be awesome to show off maybe we could even put a flyer advertising the club and are core values as a way to get more people involved in the greater cause I mean sure this is a hobby for some but for others this is preservation of an economic system one reef at a time kinda like a seed bank for coral that is dieing off in our oceans?? Just a thought I'm open to some feed back some ideas being pitched back and forth

What about something along the lines of a volunteer day at the aquarium? They can basically put us to work and give us a more hands on experience on what it's like running a place like that.

It may help us open that door to setting up a tank

Marcus, NJRC setup a tank there around 5 years ago; we held a meeting there for the unveiling. Not sure if it's still in place.

Most volunteer work at the Jenkinson's is for conducting group tours. They have a minimum amount of days you volunteer for. I do believe some of the tanks there were donated. I believe the Anemone tank was one. I think Jenkinson's Aquarium is trying to get more freshwater tanks. I think maybe they don't see their unique position; they can bring in saltwater from the ocean. Mystic and most other aquariums I know have to make up their own salt water. Using ocean water allowed them to replace, I believe, 30% water change a week. Of course, I don't know the drawbacks other than it takes quite a bit of basement room to prepare the water. Of course, we all have a pretty good idea how expensive a saltwater aquarium can be so costs may be a big deal. Plus it takes a lot of work to keep a tank clean and it always has to be clean. Imagine if we always had to keep our tanks display ready.
When Sandy hit, they probably could have used some help getting the aquarium back on its feet. And you know they are dedicated when many spent the hurricane at the aquarium. It wouldn't hurt to ask though.

The tank we setup was at the Camden aquarium, no Jenks. We did have a behind the scenes tour with Jenks I think last year or the year before which was quite nice. This was right before the renovations so I am curious to see what the place looks like now. They do get a decent amount of donations from people getting out of the hobby or fish that have outgrown their tanks (IIRC one of their big puffers came from a hobbyist). I forget who setup the last tour, but it was a good time and it is worth it to go see their setup and some of their breeding projects they have going on there.

Also, check out their Facebook page. They have different activities for shark week, including a shark hand stamp. This year they have had 2 behind the scenes tours, so if you missed out, you may be able to get in on one. IF you search for Jenkinson's, you should be able to find a post with pictures from our trip.
