Ask Greg (whitebird) about this. Wasn't he the one who ended up with Swimmers Itch from collecting Nassarius?

i know there are potential diseases with the ones that are caught off the shore/north carolina etc. I caught tons of the obseleta nassarius right off of sandy hook, NJ. The kids had fun messiin with them and the hermits. But no one i know caught any disease. Of course we gave all the kids wipes/etc to clean afterwards.

getting a 404 error jim.

Went back to where I read/copied the address, and got the same problem so...:jaded:

The bottom line was to make sure the species you buy are the nassarius vibrex. Due to the fact that many nassarius sp. are sold in the hobby that are from much cooler waters, and are more predatory. The article went into more fact/detail, but I can't open it either.

I still have plenty of these snails and some hermits from Sandy Hook collected about 2 years ago.
They are survivers (2 FW treatments ) and hard workers.

Yes, it is what Greg (whitebird) had. It is a trematode parasite that burrows under the skin and causes a blotchy red rash. With Greg, it was so severe that I believe it put him in the hospital a few times. Part of the life cycle of this parasite is spent in snails….the same snails you find along NJ beaches. We have tons along the Sayreville beaches, and I won’t touch them. If anyone is interested in these festering little creatures, come to Waterfront Park at low tide….you can collect millions of Ilyanassa….but be prepared!
