Lawn mower blenny

Ok, We had gotten a lawnmower blenny a while back and we already had one in our tank, The one we had chased the new one around alot. Then our 1st one decided to jump ship we found him behind our 120 when we switched to the 180 the 2nd one started to get very fat then a few days ago I noticed the blenny was back to a normal size. Looking under the tank 2 days ago I noticed in my overflow little guys swimming around. I also saw some swimming under my liverock. My question is: Is this possible that they could of bred? And what do I do with the babies?

You have baby lawnmower blennies in your tank? WOW! If they're sizeable then I guess you've done all you need to do. Congrats on the accidental breeding!

how little are the little guys

There is quite a few and I would say almost between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch swimming all over in the overflow and you can see some in the main area of the tank under a mushroom rock. It helps to have a bare bottom you can see everything under the rock. As soon as they get some size to them I'll take pictures my camera isn't that good for those little guys. Has anyone had this happen before?

That's pretty cool. You need to find out what they need for food! Congrats. Too bad the spouse bit the dust! You could'a had a goldmine there! :)

I know but there are alot of babies. The only difference between the 2 was the female was lighter in color then the male.

Once you can catch them, you can probably sell them (fish stores, hobbiests, ...)

They definetly will be for sale there has to be over fifty of them, not counting the ones I see under the liverock
The little ones in the overflow have a good chance of surviving as long as they don't swim to high up

Not to sound disbelieving, but are you sure they are actually fish larvae? Their movements look a lot like the movements of mysid shrimp.

Anyway you can siphon 1 or 2 out and get a better look at them?

yeah that does look like them. How would they have gotten in the system I don't see any in the refugium only in the main tank

They probably came in on the LR. I have them in my display tank and occasionally they show up in the sump. The majority of them are in the display though.

Whether they are fish larvae or mysids, they are a great thing to have as they are a sign of a healthy system.

WOW - you've got babies! Congratulations! Whatever they may be, it's got to be the coolest thing. I, too, wonder how you can end up with baby Mysids, unless you had them in your rock?

PS. Still hoping they are lawnmower blennies because that would just be outrageous.

Yeah, I'm hoping too it just seems strange that the blenny was bulging and now she isn't and these little guys show up. Atleast I know our system is doing well :D

Hard to tell from the photo, but from the movement it looks like the swarm of mysids I have in my tanks. Easiest way to figure it out would be... if they are swimming likely fish, if they are running on the bottom its mysid... or net a few.

As for your blenny being so fat, maybe because the other one was gone...she/he got a ton of food that the otherone would have been eating so she fattened up, is thinner now since she ate through the food... good news if they are mysid though, more free food

Wendy, I have a ton of these things in my tanks/sump, if you're even in my area let me know and I'll try to catch you some, others have gotten some LR from me and have the same... they breed LIKE CRAZY!

Awesome, Candi. I might just take you up on that offer and make a trip just for that. :) Thanks so much for offering.
