After reading the for sale sections on njreefers and reef central for a while I've noticed a lot of burnt out moonlight LEDs on hoods. My understanding was that LEDs lasted for about 10,000 hours why so many failures.
pure hypothesis - but
a) the quality of the LED bulbs is inferior to say the ones being manufactured for the Solaris fixures.
b) the LED bulbs are adversely impacted by the main display lights (MH heat etc).
c) while they are rated for 10,000 hrs - perhaps they are not rated to go full output over that lifespan? what I mean is that it may dim significantly over the course of those hours...just like we normally change out the pc/vho/mh before it actually "dies".
I think Phil519 has some good points, but I think also perhaps the rating for the moonlights is for 'optimum circumstances' and well, sticking it close to the salinity and moisture impacts the longevity of them.
I would think that might factor in. I know they're sealed...but...
LED's usually do last many hours. If some are burning out, I suspect it's because they are being over driven. In other words, the current is too high for the LED. It's a trade off, more current gives more light.
You could likely replace them if you are good at soldering small electronic components. If not, then decide if you want to return the fixture to the manufacturer for repair, or just live without the LEDs.
one good option in regardsto LED replacement is the Current USA sunpod, i think the reason they placed the LEDS on removable panels is for this very reason. Saves you the expense of a whole new fixture.
EIther that or a standalone lunar light set that can be bad these days for around 20-30 dollars
