I'm buying a 28 gal JBJ cube from @brokereefer which is a bit deep- I think the dimensions are 22"l x 22"h X 17w- The stock light isn't good for anything other than zoas I think- I plan on having some sps corals and am looking for a light that won't break the bank ( I plan on spending all my money on frags from you guys :D ) recommendations?- any for sale cheap?

I would strongly consider this which is for sale on Craigslist. Guy lives in Morristown. I think JBJ actually designed this to go on their Nanocubes in the past. Older technology, but metal halide will grow anything (and this one's really cheap!)

aquarium metal halide lighting - general for sale - by owner (craigslist.org)

Ok, now this will sound stupid/ dumb- I have a 175w halide light that I got along with the 30g long- I shelved it and bought a 165W black box thinking it would be easier/ better/ cheaper to run. I am totally un educated about halides- help me here- could I use the halide either in the 30L or the 28cube and the the 165w led in the other

So my research so far says that I need both halide and t5- not where I was hoping to go-back to the original question

Metal halides can provide a lot of power and penetration deep into the tank. But often they're supplemented with LEDs or T5s to get better color. Some of this also depends of how big an area of coverage you need.

Does anyone use 'black boxes'. I'm thinking about getting the 300 w Relassy for my 40b and use my 165w for the new 28 JBJ cube- Kessels and Primes are just too expensive for me- even used ones
