lights.

I posted on for sale or trade and I need to try again. looking for lighting for a 55 gal. tank anyone have something decent they want to sell?

I don't have anything to sell, but the key to what lighting you need is what you want to keep in the system.

If your lighting requirements are modest, because you have a FO, FOWLR or a reef with corals that will tolerate lower levels of light, you might do very well getting a couple of 4 foot long shoplights from Home Depot or other store. Used with good bulbs, you'd have 160w of light (4 x 40w bulbs), which wouldn't be too bad for a 55. You would need to either build a fixture for them or suspend them over the tank, and they are not waterproof, so you should use a cover glass over the tank. The big advantage is that shoplights are very inexpensive.

If your lighting requirements are much greater, you might consider a DIY project and build what you need.

Your FW fish don't need that sort of lighting, but if you maintain a FW planted aquarium, the plants would love it.

I use 150w HQIs on my 90 gal planted tank, and the plants do fantastic. It's kind of ashame that more of the high tech stuff we take for granted in SW reefs doesn't find itself into the FW hobby.
