Live rock on glass or egg crate?

OK, Need some opinions. Should I place egg crate under my live rock so it is not in direct contact with the glass or should I just place the rock on the glass and fill around with sand?

We've always put our rock down on the glass (never on top of sand).

Your question was eggcrate or glass. Glass. I've never seen the eggcrate method. And if you were asking about the sand the reason why is if you put the rock ontop of the sand you run the risk of toppling your rock if the sand shifts.

I actually put my rock on top of some sand. Maybe 1/4". Not thick however. I find it helps give support to the rock itself and I can stack the rock without it falling over or wiggling much at all.

Once all the bottom rock is in place I'll build up the remaining sand bed to whatever height I want it to be.

This is what I have done also. I find that any weird angles on the rock dig into the sand and the rock can lay the way I want it too.

Me three! ;D

Eggcrate will create realy dead spots under the rock. Carlo's method of 1/4" is excelent if you have larger pieces, but if you have smaller pieces (lb or less) even smaller shifts of 1/4" univenly distibuted between many pieces can result in large shifts or instabiliy of the whole structure.

Thanks for all the replies. My current tank has the rock on the sand, I just wasnt sure if there was a better way to do it.

I think egg grate on the glass may not be a good idea. It will eventually fill up with silt, detritus, etc. There should be no issue putting the rock on the glass bottom. Don't pack in the rocks when you are aquascaping. Leave lots of open spaces. I try not to put slabs or flat peices down on the bottom.
