locally collected sand and macro-algae?

i am planning to go to sandy hook today to pick up some shore shrimp and amphipods. 8) i just installed a pair of refugium bins last night and was wondering if its safe or advisable to collect sand and some of the cooler looking algae to stock them.
this should be a link to a vid of my basic setup.

I have never done it myself, but I know of a bunch of people on this board who collect things from the wild.

There are quite a few members that collect locally. Welcome to the club!

thanks for the information. is there anything that I should avoid? Im planning to set up a deep sand bed and would like to use some sand from the back side of sandy hook as its probably loaded with good microorganism already. any thoughts on this?
