TwinReef has the 150 and takes some nice shots with it, but I think he also has a 105. I think the 105 is a good focal length. That's what I have. When I want it to be a little longer, I put a 1.4TC or extension tubes on it. I have the Nikon, so I can't vouch for the Sigma personally.

I've been doing a little researc and I think I'm going to try to find a Nikon 105 without the vr. It's no longer available but, there's always a few on Ebay.

If all you want the lens for is macro shots of your tank, you can go one further and get the manual focus one on ebay. That one can be had for under 300$.

I recommend you check:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/

it has user reviews for most lenses. They grade the lenses according to several criteria. I always do my research there before spending $$$.

I used to buy third party lenses including 4 Sigma's but I never found them to beat the camera manufactor's own version. I ended up ebaying all my Sigma stuff and bought in my case Canon stuff and found the build quality and optics to be much better of course the price is way higher too!!! but they hold their value longer.

Thanks. The
Nikon 105mm lenses on ebay are a little overpriced, after emailing back and forth they all want 600 and up for a used one without thr vr. I'm just going to order the one with vr, it's only 100 - 125 more for a new one.

What you have to watch on Ebay is the warranty. The low priced lenses have a international warranty. You have to ship the lens back to the manufacturer if there is a problem, in most cases Japan.

I was only going to use ebay for a used one. I'll get the new one from either b+h or abes of maine.
