Macros and chemi clean

Will Chemi Clean kill macro algae? About every 3 months or so I like to hit my tank with chemi clean when I start seeing some cyano but I've never used macros in the past.

Should I remove it then dose or not worry about it?

Great question. I’m eager to hear the response. As I just recently Started a fuge and was wondering the same thing. With that said. I would like to add to this question. My refugium has a small ball of marcro and the glass is covered in regular algae. Should or can I clean the glass or should I let it be as it technically should be helping to soak up nitrates and phosphates.

From chem clean....”ChemiClean is safe for aquarium fish, corals, invertebrates, desirable macro algae, and beneficial bacteria”

Chemi clean may take care of the cyano but it will throw other things out of whack. I don’t know how it wouldn’t attack Macro algae:confused:

Can you be more specific about what the potential side effects to the tank may be with a products like chemi clean. I do not intend to use it “yet” but would like to know my risk factor if I ever do.

Chemiclean will wipeout the cyano and will kill many species of bacteria...the good bacteria and the bad. It's an antibiotic. The problem is that the cyano is a nutrient uptake device and once the cyano is removed abruptly there is a giant hole in the nutrient cycle. Something must fill that hole. What takes over that spot can be bad or good, but something must replace it.

You can also have a loss of corals and fish from using it. Cyano can produce toxins. If you suddenly kill a lot of cyano with Chemiclean, the toxins may be a killing machine.

Chemiclean is a band-aid. One needs to fix the problem that is giving you cyano.

Well I have used chemi clean in the past and only lost 1 coral and that was a plating purple sponge. Other than that no ill side effects. The last time I used it, I didnt have macros so i was curious.

Also I know what the problem is and it's me..... as I've mentioned that i have LARS

I left my T5 bulbs on my system for way past the 12 month mark and since then I started to see little patches. (Nothing noticeable until you get close up to the tank. Also add to the fact that when I replaced them, I didn't burn them in 1st, so I'm sure that contributed to the issue.

Count yourself lucky. The area that you wiped out cyano must have been replaced by good bacteria. But image those who's empty spot was filled in with something bad like dinos.

Time for cocktail hour! Cheers
