hey guys, need some advice currently in my chambers in the biocube i have some matrix pellets and a polish cloth keeping it simple for now, heard from some reefers that they add some marine pure block into the media rock or into the flow areas like replacing the sponge with a marine pure block anyone have any experience with this or recommend getting it. heard it also makes a good hotel for pods to live in the chamber eventually want to add a mandarin need a good pod population any advice is good advice

All my nanos had a media rack with floss on the top and then as much Marinepure as I could cram into the rest of the rack (and the rest of the filter area if there was any space). When I built my AIO partition for my 40 I left a full chamber for the stuff, and there's 6 pounds of the stuff in my 100g's sump.
So, I'm on the 'as much as possible' side.

And yes, they do become pod hotels, but a mandarin in a biocube isn't a great idea. I had a mandarin in a very pod heavy 90g and within 6 weeks it was starving.
They'll strip a biocube of pods in a day.

really thats interesting cause the guy i bought my tank from had his mandarin in there for like 3 years barely added pods he used seachem matrix through out his whole media chamber had a green mandarin thriving well didnt think theyd eat it that fast

I have marine pure and IMO it works as advertised However it is super fragile and crumbles under any handling. Given the chance to do it over I like brightwells version. Way stronger doesn’t crumble.
As far as mandarins go. Take marks advice. They are primarily pod eaters and will starve in even a medium tank. Do not trust even your closest friends in this regard. Some rare mandarins will eat other foods including flake but this is not the norm. If he wasn’t adding pods than he was fortunate and the fish was supplementing with other non mandarin food please think of the health of the fish before purchasing. If you are prepared to regularly supplement his food by all means get one. Maybe you will get lucky and it will eat frozen food

Did a search on how many pods can a mandy eat and found a ton of advice, first and only one I opened is this one, and its exactly what I would have expected...
How many Pod Cultures for Mandarin?

They're now being tank bread by ORA or Biota though they're being shipped out incredibly tiny with most not surviving shipping (ask me how I know, twice).
I had a discussion with someone at LiveAquaria and was told they were considering stopping shipping the infants due to the losses and I think they've done so since.

But, as they're now captive bred and being trained on frozen give it another year for them to hit the market.
I'll be first in line.

Off the marine pure topic.. but I just received 2 blue mandarins from LA. Both came in a little under an inch, but eating baby brine that I got from Absolutely. Tossing in a couple of flakes and pellets at the same time as brine feeding, hoping they'll associate them with food.. so far so good. I'm afraid they're both males though, may have to relocate one as they get older.
