Mirco Bubbles from Skimmer

My skimmer is in the same chamber of my sump as my return pump. Previously, the water from the skimmer was dumped onto a sponge that I recently eliminated to cut down on nitrates.

I have tried routing the water through the bio-balls in the other chamber, but that has not seemed to work. I even took some filter pad material and placed in in there to help solve this.

How do you folks eliminate micro bubbles?

i am battling micro bubbles myself, but my skimmer is not in the same chamber. i plan on my making modifications to my bubble trap. i would suggest installing a bubble trap between your skimmer and return pump.

why dont you put the sponge back and eliminate the bio balls if you want to reduce nitrates. Rinse the sponge once a week and your good

yes, but you will still need to keep it clean on a regular basis. I have chaetomorpha underneath the return of my tank and skimmer, that cuts down on the microbubbles a lot; but that may not work for you since your return pump is in the same chamber

I have baffles to elimate it but I never got rid of them all until I put a filter bad on top of them. I think that helps the best. I am just really good about keeping it clean.

I have my skimmer 1 compartment away from my return pump with 2 sponges in my under/over/under bubble trap and still have micro bubbles too. I am not sure if there is a way to rid them completely.

You can also try reducing the flow through your sump, if you throttle back the pump a bit it *may* give the bubbles a little more time to ride to the surface before reaching the pump.

I have a 65 gal with a 20gal DIY sump, aqua C urchin pro skimmer with a mag 3, and a Pentair Quiet One 3000 return pump throttled back to about 600gph. Maybe a 20 sump is too small but its the biggest I could get under the tank without going custom.

I'm always open to suggestions to cure the micro bubble blues.
