MP40 or Gyre XF150

I've been out of the game for a while and not keeping track of the ongoing developments with equipment.

In the past I used 2 MP40's on a 180. Now I see a lot of people going to the Gyre. I probably see about a 50/50 split.

So what are the pros and cons of each for a 180? Is one better than the other for a techie like myself?

I'm still running 2 MP40's and also have 2 WP-25's as well. Longevity has pretty much kept me there. I have been running MP-40's for about 3 years and before that they were MP-20's if my calculations are right they are going on 6 years now. That's money well spent right there. They clean up easily and get right back to work. Every time I even consider the Gyre I simply hit the forums and read about all the issues that come up with them and I just can't see myself switch. I see snails thrashing the propellers and wires falling apart in saltwater and while these issues have supposedly been addressed how were they allowed to become issues in the first place. I have also read about many people breaking them during cleaning. A little to much corraline and apparently they simply will not come apart. A little to much force is used and then a call to Coralvue is needed for new parts. I believe this is all attributed to a rush to get the pump to market which ultimately lead to a lack of planning, testing, quality control. I guess you can tell I'm not a fan.

That all said I think that the gyre all by its lonesome simply not the answer. IMO it needs to be used in a system that has a certain openness to it. Peninsula's and a minimalist rock scape come to mind. Rock walls and big overflows are just not going to cut it. I also believe it needs to be paired up with a pump that has the ability to break up that flow a bit for our systems to benefit from a more random and chaotic flow. I have been reading more and more about people using both a gyre and other pumps that oppose the flow.

Anyway that's my $.02. I'm sure you will soon get the other side of the story

I was running a shallow 60 with low rock work and the gyre did a pretty good job. When I moved to a 90 with higher rockwork it moved water but I had a number of dead spots with singular flow away from the gyre in the top of the tank and towards the gyre lower. In the end I placed the gyre high on the left, angled my return slightly towards the center of the tank, and added an MP10 on the opposing wall halfway down. I set both the gyre and the MP10 on their ramp up/ramp down settings and it seems to work well.
So, agreed with Jgraz. Two gyres with opposing flow might be interesting though.

I have both and run both together because I think they each to things well. So I have an mp60 on one side and a gyre on the other, creates some crazy flow patterns which is nice.

The Gyres that are coming out now have new parts that address all the issues that have come up over the past year. Especially the new paddles which are much stronger. The Gyre flow wise is much stronger and more powerful than even two MP40s. For a 180 you will need multiple pumps which ever pump you pick.

MPs have the battery backup which is huge for protection just in case. I think both would be best solution on a bigger tank.

I have a single gyre 150 on my 180g pennisula and it does a good job. I'm thinking of buying 2 Mp40s for the back glass just because everyone is selling them so cheap :x

I took out my gyre, which self destructed. Very poor materials. Luckily the power pack fits the mp40 I had laying around. The best thing about the gyre is the fancy metal box it came in. Real nice.

Not too thrilled with my gyre 150. Picked up a big controllable tunze for Christmas...I have a 300 gallon peninsula. the 150 was not enough for it. the 170 never came out.
