Munchie's Rimless Planted Tank

I love reefs and corals and definately appreciate all of the awesome things that come with a full blown reef. I have been lost for hours looking at planted tanks by Takahashi Amano and almost ordered everything I would need to start my OWN planted tank. That idea was vetoed by the wife on the grounds that I will be too busy building my new tank to divide my attention. BOO!

BUT

My son (Chris aka Munchie) has been asking for his his own tank in his room and something to use as a night light. While at pet shanty he picked out a DeepBlue 12X12X12 Rimless Reef that he said was a good size for him. Mom approved under the condition that I have to limit all of the equipment to (1 Power Strip TOTAL.) I Also cannot attach any skimmer that makes stinky outside of the tank.

This does not leave much room for Filtration. So heres the Plan.

Lighting

SKYYE Light from NUVO 6x LED's

Filtration

Established Stand from my 150Gal Reef approx 3/4lbs
Established Live Rock from my Sump
DeepBlue Clear HOB Filter

The Goal with this tank is to make all of the filtration almost entirely handled by plants. We will be Planting Dragon Breath Algae and any other cool looking and popular algae's to act as natural bio filters. For fish we will consider a shrimp and maybe 1 or 2 catalina gobies/rainford goby/neon goby something of that nature. Maybe even a sea horse or 2. Hopefully we can find an abundance of Algae's and Sea plants to plant.

Paul is winning the internetz!

Tristian, If you can't get by with Paul's loophole... you might want to consider a UV filter on that system.

As for macro algae, I get good results from Chaeto, but it's not the prettiest looking thing to be shown in a display tank.

You might get some good ideas from Here though.

Paul great loophole! She said one power strip, didn't say what size or how many outlets. :D
