My 1st Clam - Derasa...helping me mourn my late fire shrimp.

Any advice for a novice clam owner would be appreciated as always. By the way, Happy New Year to all you guys!!!

Deresas can grow rather large (only the gigas grows bigger) and should be on the sandbed. Putting it on a clam shell is a technique that is typically used for smaller species like maximas and croceas.

It's weight (as it grows) will keep it stablized on the sandbed. It is possible for deresas to be on LR but as it grows it can impact the structure and if it gets too big - it may simply fall over due to sheer weight.

what happened to the dragon wrasse?

The dragon wrasse is the reason he's not on the sand. If I place him on the sand I am afraid the wrasse will cover the clams mantle in sand. Its only an inch or two above the sand. Once I catch that damn dragon I'll place the clam on the sandbed, right where he is now. The clam is now about 2.5". Hopefully, I'll be able to catch the wrasse. I am not kidding, I heard the wrasse laughing at me during the last "3 stooge" episode of catching that thing!!

It looks like you epoxied the clam into place, what was the reasoning for that? Most folks just let the clam attach themselves to the rock. Not sure of the epoxy will have an adverse effect of the clams foot or not.

I would think the epoxy would hold the shell in one position and not allow the clam to open and close freely. OH yeah, btw nice clam.

Thanks for the input. The epoxy was formed prior to placing in the tank. Kinda acting like a holder for it. S made sure it had hardened prior to putting it in the water. saw some ideas on RC about making ledges for them. However, I never thought of the epoxy causing an adverse reaction. i am gonna have to research it.

I haven't been up there in a coons age. I heard they redid the sw section with some frag tanks?
