My dusro is gurglin pretty loud. Any advice?

It has been goin for a year or so. The air hole on top of the drain is progressively getting worse with it's gurgling. Any ideas as to why its starting t d this? It has never done it before, and it is starting to fire my wife up. Gotta fix it and fast!!!

Probably not the main problem, but make sure there is a whole up top and it is clear. Mine closed up over time with salt creep and it made some nasty noises. Another thing that may be happening is either A) the outlet of the overflow is under water which is no good, or B)the drop is causing a siphon(which is happening to me) I am planning on upsizing my piping as soon as I can and I think this will alleviate this problem.

I am not an expert, but these are my thoughts

The airhole was a little under water. I just got a pipe cleaner and threaded it out. Also have a strainer in the durso to prevent any snails from blockin it up. I took that off and cleaned that out also...had some algae growin on it. Seemed to have done it. The water level dropped below the top of the durso. NO MORE NOISE.

connect a small tube to it (essentially raising the hole). Keep the tube away from the tank and adjust the height of the tube to get the right noise level.

Why is it bad for the return pipe to be underwater?
9 times out of 10 air bubbles get trapped and add up with no way to escape. When this happens, the air bubble finds it's way up the piping and comes out of the durso causing splashing and a gurgling noise as the air escapes.

They are talking about a durso standpipe that looks something like this home-made one:

In the top of this drain pipe is a little hole that keeps the drain from starting a siphon. If that hole is clogged or underwater, a siphon could start. Here’s a picture of the top of a durso drain showing that little hole:

That’s what needs to stay above water.

Oh ok. I thought they were talking about the line that goes into the sump.
