My First Build After A Long Hiatus 58RR Oceanic

I didn't take alot of pics through the entire build but do have some pics of the tank in various stages. The tank was my old reef tank from around 1993, the stand was disintegrating so I was in a hurry and bought a cheap one. I made a canopy for it after I bought a Nova Extreme Pro 6 bulb 36" Fixture. I have since replaced some of the bulbs with some more suitable lights (It was loaded with 3 TruLumen 14k's and actinics).

The sump is an old tank I resealed and compartmented for Chaeto, NWB 110 Skimmer and Ehiem returm pump. I originally hard piped everything with the ehiem pump as an external but it was too noisy. Using it internally with tubing and rubber feet cured it. I also used a shower curtain as a liner and foam insulation to keep it from tearing and to keep some of the noise down.

Since the heat started rising beacuse of the hood and canopy I fired up an old chiller I had from '94, cut the thermostat wires and relay and wired it direct to stay on. I control it with the Reef Angel I bought along with dosing pumps, Nova Pro, LED refuge lights, ATO and what-nots. Now that I have enjoyed the electric bill for about 4 months and since I got a 12v relay box from Reef Angel I bought 4 quiet computer fans and drilled holes in the back of the canopy and hooked those up to the RA as well. My chiller finally remains quiet (Thank God).

I have been slowly adding to the tank since I started it 2/21/13 and other than bubble algae that I think I picked up from a LFS I think I am on the right track. I have had a couple members toss me some frags (Thanks ThatGuy for the Candy Cane and BuGG for the GSP, Paly's and Purple Cap) but I continue to move slow and cautiously...

Love the branch rock in there. Well done and great way to start a build thread.

Wow u weren't kidding. Nice rock work! I like that a lot. Still too expensive for me tho haha

Looking great Doug!

Do you have the canopy fans triggered via a temp probe or just coded to run on a time schedule?

Been thinking of picking that 12v relay up myself because when I do my upgrade I'll be losing 2 power ports to my new dosing pumps and one of those is currently a canopy fan that is triggered based on temp. If I get the power control expansion, I could control the dosing pumps as well as a few computer fans and then I'll have a couple outlets to spare.

They are currently set to kick on when the lights come on and go off an hour after lights out. I wanted to trigger off the temp probe in the canopy but I was in a hurry and programming timers was easier.

I like the 12v expansion a lot. It does have some draw backs though. Each relay is rated at 500 mA so one relay. can only support 2 of my fans (each fan is rated at 200 mA) so the 4 fans take up 2 relays. They run my 2 dosing pumps with no problems though so I am pretty happy with it. I think it will also run a dc ato pump as well but Roberto doesn't recommend it if it is almost constantly running. My ato is a small ehiem pump that used to power my oceanic plus series skimmer (antique) and I have the end of the hose restricted so it does not add too much make up water to the system (I add calcium hydroxide to the ro water) but I am thinking I will eventually get a dc ato with a pressure switch to replace the floats. I like the Reef Angel a lot. Although I wish would come out with a hard wired Ethernet connection.

My lumentek 240 is finically on its way. Will be here on Wednesday and I am stoked! Can't wait to see it in action. Of course I need to build another canopy cause the one I just built won't fit the new light and I think I need to raise the lighting another 7" or so. 90 degree optics. I am hoping to get that shimmer that I have been missing on my tank!

Sorry for the crappy phone pics. My lumentek came today. I love it!

Now I need to make another canopy, the one j have now only only fits the current nova 6x39 this light replaces.

I love this light! 10 minute incremental dimming, 3 channels. I started it out at 35% blues and 20% whites. Well worth the 399 delivered!
