My new Anemone care of Petco

I know all of you are going to say, PETCO really? Yes and to my suprise this one looked damn good in their tank. I intended on getting a sebea anemone for my leukranos clown but i just happened to stumble upon this.

44.99 for assorted carpet anemone. Settling in nicely, this one is a stichodactyla gigantea or a Giant Carpet Anemone. The mouth is closing up nice and its been expanded, just needs a little more flow, those tentacle should be like angel hair pasta.

nice i found mine on sale for 20 at petco with the pals card. but after eating my ringtail tang he died 1 day before the halides went up...

my other one that is around 20 inches wide ate a orange shoulder tang and still lived.

This one seems to be doing well and its actually looked great in their tank.

Lets hope this one doesnt have a taste for fish.

I have a Haddoni myself although its been acting a bit temperamental lately and totally shrunk the other day and I thought it was done for. Mine has never eaten a fish knock on wood.

It looked awful but by later that night it was back open again.

It may have a bit too much flow in the tank and am working with a few people on R/C to try to fix the issues so it settles back down.

Didnt know there was a fan base for carpets here or I would have asked about mine....seemed like most people here have bubbles.

Lately ive been in the business of rehabilitating the less hardy anemones,

So far ive had a gigantea and magnifica and a dozen or so RBTAS that have been sold off. The mag is with a guy in philly now and growing like crazy. My real goal is to score a mertens again.

Mertens and gigantea carpets like strong flow. Haddoni are sand dwelling anemones pickin on gobies and small fish that crawl, sometimes catching free swimming fish. They like lower flow.

A gigantea or mertens would love that much flow. Haddoni usually are found at the base of the reef where the rock and sand meet.

Last Night i stole(borrowed) one of my gfs nano koralias and its loving the more flow. Hopefully its settled in by Friday when i go pick up this guy from Will.

Day Three
So i added a Nano Koralia last night in hopes that the increased flow would get the anemone to begin to expand and grab hold. Its been doing really good. Heres the last pictures. Check out that mouth

Looks good.....wait till that clown starts jumping on it like a little kid on a bed and then the fun will begin.

Clowns and their anemones...its a beautiful thing

The new clown didn't take well to the gigantea carpet so I gave the carpet the boot up to the big tank to get some more flow and its digging it. I called around to some lfs and one had a large bleached sebea. So I took a ride and picked it up the no less them 1 minute in the tank this is what I saw!!!!!!

very cool combo there barry. hit me up tomorrow, i just remembered that i know a guy that i think may have bred that species. he's a guy i bumped into and as it turns out is a long time friend of mikem. and from what i've heard george was a pioneer in breeding clown fish more than 30 years ago. so long ago that from what i understand. he's the guy that got mike m. started in the hobby. so i think the entire club could owe this guys thanks for the contributions made by his protoge... haha. i've been trying to get him to be more active in the club, and now i think mikes on the job too. but i can help you contact him.

Ed, thanks for talking about me.. I know it was about how fun and cool i am!!! :p

Its actually sad these anemones actually only come in bleached white or in fact dyed different colors. Yellow, pink. Vendors who carry them do know that these anemone are dyed and infact bleached.

I actually would prefer a bleached one because the chance of survival is better without the addition of food dyes. The anemones are usually only found in browns greens and tans but they bleach so easily.

I actually had a dyed one.....never knew that they did that type of thing....its awful. Its also not healthy for them and really a death sentence over a matter of time.

Here is mine when I got it.

Here is it a month later after it started to fade and decline in health

It wasnt a happy experience to say the least...will never buy another dyed anemone again now that I know that this is what they do to them
