I have an old Gateway Solo laptop. I can't access the internet with it. It uses a Linksys wireless network card 802.11b. It slides in on the side of the PC. I am running XP. The icons show the card is active and working; so does the LAN conncetion show my router and good signal strength. Every time I select Explorer get no connection available. I am not familiar with this ntw card; anybody know how to configure this thing?
I can't use the USB because they are low speed already tried and the connection would be up and running and drop every 5 minutes.

Have you tried rebooting everything? You would be surprised at how often that works. I had the smae thing happen to me on my PC and it worked afterwards. You may need to unplg it from the power supply for at least 30 seconds to make sure the powere is fully drained before restarting.

Hey Mark,

Some questions:

-Can you connect to the wireless lan with any other machines? If you do not have any other machines I would reboot the router (shut off 5 minutes, let it sit and bring it back up).
-Does your router support 802.11b networks? I know that I have turned off b networks for years since WPA is not allowed over 802.11b.

Since it seems like you have connected to the wireless SSID correctly (says active and working and shows your router with good signal) it sounds like the card is working correctly. Do you have an IP address? Start --> Run --> command <hit enter>. Then in the msdos window type in ipconfig and verify that the IP Address matches your network (default is normally 192.168.1.x where x normally equals 2 to 254).

If so, it sounds like your browser is hosed / broken or you have some type of malware.

I would download firefox 3.0 and see if that works.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/3.0/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%203.0.exe

That is probably not going to work though, so do this.

Start --> Run --> command <hit enter>
in the msdos window do this:

Hit enter after each line:

c:
cd \
ftp ftp.mozilla.org
When prompted for login and password type anonymous (login) and password is your email address
Then type bin <hit enter>
pub
firefox
releases
3.0
win32
en-US
get Firefox%20Setup%203.0.exe

Then once it completes type in quit or exit
then from that dos window type in Firefox%20Setup%203.0.exe <hit enter> and it should begin installing (or you can do it from windows explorer)

Sorry for the long read.

I would try the control panel and go to network connections. Right click and try repair connection. If that goes fine, hit the windows key + r and type cmd. When that is open type: ping www.google.com

This will tell you if your internet is connecting. If it times out you have a networking issue. (I would power cycle your modem first and then your router and see if that fixes it)

If the ping works ok, open up internet explorer, click on file and make sure that you aren't in work offline mode. It might be something that simple or you could download firefox like duijver said.

I can connect to the internet with the PC. I used a USB plug-n-play wireless adapter (Zyxel). It configured fine and I could surf the web but every 5/10 minutes I would get disconnected. I assume because the adpater is a hi-speed device and the uSB port is not. I know this because I got a warning when installing it.

Just noticed something. The NTW card has 2 lights power and link. The power light is lit but not the link. Does that matter and if so how do I fix?
