New Member New Tank!

Hi All,

New member and new tank owner here. Currently, my 120g is cycling and I could use some help with the noise. Here is some detail on the tank:

120gallon with dual overflows and returns
Ecotech radion 15w Pro (2)
eshopps sump/refugium
tunze doc9410
phosban550
mag 9.5 pump
all pluming flex tubing except return is pvc
durso pipes
hydor koralias 600 (2)

My issue is with the right overflow. No matter how I adjust the durso, the overflow seems to fill them release water causing a gurgling sound and water level fluctuation of 3 inches in the overflow itself. I'm concerned the drain line is too long and filling with air causing the issue. The left overflow does not do this.

Any advice on this or other things I should consider with this set up is appreciated!

Welcome to the club!! The 120 is a great size and will be upgrading to one shortly. Two things I noticed, one you will need much more flow, and the lights may not cover well if you want coral.

I'm thrilled with the way the lighting has covered the tank...I hope it translates to the coral. Can you go into more detail about the flow? Thanks for the feedback.

Currently you have around 15x turnover of the display tank. For a tank with coral I would shoot for a minimum of 30x or 3600gph. I currently have 55x turnover and it finally is enough to keep everyone healthy and happy.

For my 120 I will doing two jebeo rw15. But it depends on your budget. They are the best bang for the buck you will find.

OK I actually made a mistake, I have 2 hydor koralia evolution 1500 pumps, so I should be OK?

I'd honestly look to replace both of them with a jebao powerheads. They're not that costly now and they're better than the hydors. I've used hydors in the past but they always crapped out on me after a few months however I do use 1 in my mixing container and its been going strong for awhile now.

Maybe you are pushing to much into the durso which will make it flush like a toilet, try to turn down your return to see if that helps

Thanks for all the replies! I am going to dig in and try a few of these suggestions this weekend.

As for the tank, I am in day 9 of the cycle with live rock. Testing today read:

Ammonia-0
Nitrite-1
Nitrate-50
PH-8.2
Alkalinity-7
Phosphate-.08 (very tough to read the red sea test kit)
Salinity-1.29

Other than the salinity needing to come down a bit is there anything else I should be concerned with? I have not experienced an algae bloom yet. Keep on keeping on? Cycle process going smoothly?

Calibrating with rodi is close but not accurate enough for your purpose. You need to calibrate with calibration fluid. Using rodi will usually be off by .02 or .03.
