Niger Trigger

Anyone have one in their reef? If so, does it pick at corals/eat snails and shrimp? I really want one since I love the look, but dont know if it's worth the risk. Blue jaw would probably be a safer bet right?

i've had niger's in a fowlr that were docile enough for a reef, but never actually had one in a reef

that being said, i have also had niger's that were mean as could be

so its luck of the draw i guess

i would suggest a blue jaw, i have been thinking of adding one too

Dr. Jim has an awesome looking niger that he says is mostly reef safe and it is mixed with many other fish in his tank so he seems to be peaceful. But he said there is a chance he will eat my shrimp and snails. I have a lot of shrimp and I like them. I think I will hold off for a blue jaw, for the "just in case" factor

The Niger Trigger is considered more of a reef safe trigger along with the blue chin. The trick seems to keep them well fed to discourage the behavior of nipping because once they learn bad habits it is down hill.

Well I bought the niger trigger and he is awesome. He lets the cleaner shrimp climb all over him and he hasnt even glanced at a piece of coral

IMO the blue throat is a must prettier trigger than the niger. that and you dont have to worry about him messing with your corals or inverts. blue throat gets my vote.

The cross hatch are awesome looking, but a very hefty price tag. The niger hasnt looked at corals or the 4 cleaner shrimp I have.

I've had one since Aug`08 nice fish very deep purple has really grown now is begining to develop streamers on his tail. No red teeth yet, very well feed but will kill any inverts in my tank. Doesnt mess around w/ corals however small fish he'll attack also. I kind of wanted to sell him so I could keep shrimps but I like him too much, lol... Good luck, post a pic when you can.
