Ok to use as a saltwater mixing / holding container?

I don't think the axle actually runs thru the can but i could be wrong. I would be concerned about it not being food grade. What about buying one of those rubbermaid stock tanks? they have a 100 gallon tank.

Any of those cans that have wheels have an axle that runs through the bottom of the can. FWIW, I have two of the Rubbermaid Brute cans that I bought the dollies for, that I use for making and storing my SW. I've been using them for about 5 years now, without a problem.

You're right....my curiosity was peaked so i went and looked at my neighbors.....he couldn't figure out why i was inspecting his garbage can :). i also use the brute cans. One is for sw reserve and the other is rodi just for emergencies. I do wish i had gotten the dolly for them.

Sandee...I use a similar style can, just smaller. The wheels are nice and I've never had a problem with it not being food grade. I don't store water for more than 3-4 days though. Also, the can starts to bow outward because of the shape not holding the pressure uniformly. Mine hasn't collapsed yet, but sometimes it looks like it's going to. LOL

I’m going to guess it’s made of polyethylene, and if that is the case, it’s safe to use (unless it comes from China….they have a tendency to use heavy metals in their plastic fabrications.) I am a little concerned in that the HD info page states that it holds 300 some-odd pounds, while 96 gallons of water weighs about 800 pounds. And, you won't be able to move 800 gallons with two little plastic wheels. I agree with the comment above about using a stock tank…they cost about the same or less, and are made to hold large volumes of water.

I agree with some of the comments.I too use a plastic recycling container with the locking dollie on the bottom.I only let water sit overnight as I mix the salt then transfer into the tank from there.I store water in 5 gal water cooler containers..I keep 5 on hand for "just in case"

Wow! Tnx for all the comments! If it works out, I don't intend on rolling it around - just figured it could be stored in the corner of the fishroom easily.

The axel is outside, molded thingie - but I'm still going to test it 100% outside - before filling it.

I haven't moved any fish yet - sorta overwhelming ...

Tnx. I'll check out the other brands too - if this doesn't work out. BTW, yeah, saw the ~300 lb capacity warning. We'll see. It's very rigid plastic, not flimsy at all ($90 garbage can!) ...

Contact Bax, he has 55 gallon plastic barrels for sale sometimes. They are food safe and designed to hold water. If you want to move them around you can buy the dollies for them.

Sandee, while this 96 gal. can could technically hold that much water, and the material is most likely reef safe... you have to keep in mind that it was designed to haul garbage, which is much lighter than water. The thickness most likely wouldn't hold up (for very long) to the pressure when filled up with water.

I'd have to agree to go with either the Brute cans (they are food grade and also made of thicker material... more designed for commercial use) or go with the stock tanks which are actually designed exactly for this use. The 55 gal drums that Bax sells are also excellent for storing water, but they are smaller than what you are already using now.

Sandee,

let me know if you want me to pick up the barrels from Bax. I drive past his shop every night on my home from work and I live in Rockaway so it's no trouble.

Retiming this one to Home Depot. Good looking garbage can, but not for $90!
