Old Skool tank

Hey everyone,

I decided to break down my 90, again, and set it up old skool style. I like the jaubert plenum style tank and never had a problem with it. The way I have it set up right now, just isn't going to get it. For those of you that don't know what that is, it's eggcrate, suspended above the bottom of the tank by pvc, covered by screen, a layer of crush coral, the stuff nobody likes, that's cover again my nylon/fiberglass screen, then a layer of live sand. It's supposed to help in the denitrification process.

Anyway, anyone else have their tank set up jaubert plenum stiles, or has everyone gone to remote DSB filters? What style of tank/filteration do you have? I took pics of the building process, will post them later.

I don't see any major reasons to not to use a jaubert plenum system in your tank.

If you haven't yet read them, I would recommend reading both parts of this article that compares plenum and non-plenum systems with different sandbeds. You may want to do something a little different.

After reading the articles, I felt that there may be some slight advantages to some methods over others, but the differences are slight.

While not having direct experience with using a plenum, I can say that a friend who used one a number of years ago was very pleased with it. His only caveat as I recall was taht care had to be taken in constructing it properly so that nothing reached or disturbed the bottomost layer keeping it Oxygen poor.

thanks everyone for your replies, I just finished setting up everything, back to the old way. I like it and I'll just go with what I have. I have a plenum on the bottom, covered with crushed coral and sand, a little modification, that covered with another screened plenum and that covered with sand. Things are cloudy right now, that's normal, play sand dust, but that's normal. Waiting for things to clear up and go from there.

Again, thanks for all your opinions, but other opinion are always welcomed

While I do use a Jaubert plenum, it's set up using entirely aragonite sand - no crushed coral. It pretty much makes my tank automatic. Calcium and alkalinity maintain themselves. I don't do much other than run a skimmer and change the water.
