Opinions on this Chiller

Hello there,

Even though I have had some recent problems with my CL-150 for my 12 gallon nano.. I love the fact that it does such a great job

I am working out the details of replacement now, but the piece of mind on the tank is worth it in the summer. I still supplement the heater in the winter with a lower watter stealth 50 just so the chiller does not have to come on every 10 minutes at 200watts to heat the water.. Overall they are great chillers..

I would call or write pacfic coast imports first and make sure they think it is good for your tank. They are very nice and usually respond quickly if you write them.

Find out how old it is

also make sure you do your homework on providing 650GPH through the chiller with hoses and overhead.

If you have 5 feet verticle and 6 feet horizontal of pipe with no bends then a BlueLine HD 40 should work out well..

I ran that chiller on our 120 during the summers before we went through to the basement. The tank kept "cool enough" (80-82, I think is where I ran it). Since it was only trying to drop the tank <5* it was never a problem. If your tank would get up to 90+ and you want it under 80 then it isn't the right size. I'm not sure how having it in the garage changes the equation.

Last summer, the tank never got to 90, but would get into the low 80's. I usually try to keep it around 78. I was going to call Pacific Coast today, but didn't get the chance..

I was told by several people (vendors and club members) that I needed a 1/10 for my 46g. How can you have triple the volume and use the same chiller? I'm only looking to drop my temp about 7*.

Most efficient and will work are two different things here! I'm sure it would *work* (if he does indeed only need to drop the temps 5-7*, since that worked for me), but it probably ran well more than it should have to keep the temps down. In the long run it is probably more expensive that way. I also wasn't shooting for 78. Not sure that would have been possible, given my system at the time.

I'd really question the need to keep the tank at 78 to begin with. This is the low end of the temperature our corals would normally ever be at. Why not shoot for keeping the tank at 82 (mid range temp) like Phyl did during the hot months?

You could shoot for 78 during the winter when you need to run your heaters and 82 during the summer. Using a temp range like this will simulate the corals natural temp range during these periods and will also help save on the electric bill big time as you are using the seasons to your advantage instead of fighting against them.

Interesting Carlo. I did a little research on avg. temps on the Great Barrier Reef. This is what I found:

Jan: 83
Feb: 83
Mar: 80
April: 77
May: 70
June: 69
July: 69
Aug: 71
Sept: 72
Oct: 73
Nov: 77
Dec: 81

It would be opposite here though since when it's summer here, it's winter in Australia. Also, I don't think I would want my temps in the winter to go to 69, I'd say 75 min.
