Otakon!

Who here did Otakon last weekend? And, if you were among we 22,000 people who invaded Inner Harbor, did you manage the willpower to somehow keep out of the National Aquarium (I cheated; there were three people dragging me away from the ticket office every time we passed the aquarium).

Sorry. Not among the (apparent) many. I had to google it to figure it out!

Lol. That was actually among the running jokes of the weekend, all the poor masses of tourists and Baltimore residents that had no idea what was going on. See, when we checked into the hotel room, there was actually a disclaimer sitting on the desk that explained what Otakon was and cautioning hotel guests to "expect to see some interesting sights" over the weekend.

About two years ago my family and I checked into the Sheraton up in Portland, ME. They neglected to mention they were hosting "PortCon" - some kind of local Comic-Con type event. I recognized inuyasha but i'm sure the other characters were there (bleach, naruto, etc.). You never do see anyone come in like totoro though. Oh the subtitled versions are the only ones I like to watch.

how's it going? - have your reef interests shifted to anime? ;D

So kath, what were you dressed as? Pictures?

I wasn't dressed as a character, but I did go in my generic harajuku/cat girl-esque clothing. Y'know? Short skirt, fishnet stockings, knee high socks in randomly annoying colors that could stop traffic, fox tail, yarn for hair. The usual, really. :p

Sadly, I have no pictures of me, since I was firmly rooted BEHIND a camera taking photos of everyone and everything else that would stand still long enough for my mediocre digi cam. I might be getting the few photos that exist of me tomorrow from this guy who went with our crew.

Although, as the weekend went on, and as we became more and more sleep deprived from staying out way late and heading out fairly early, I became more and more attached to the idea of going as Shnitzel from CHOWDER. Why? I really have no idea. But I had a moment of clarity at Sunday morning breakfast that Shnitzel woud be the win, especially if I went around saying only "radda," took photos of people dressed as utterly mundane as possible, and handed out mini burple nurples made out of sculpey clay. Yes. This should probably said terrible things about me and what I find amusing. Fortunately, after sleeping the con off on Monday, I thought about maybe doing Robin (Witch Hunter Robin) and possibly Fu (Samurai Champloo) next year.

I'm still trying to convince one of either two young men who I dragged with me to see HELL'S GROUND to be the burqa-wearing superkiller from the movie. It was running on the Friday night video tracks. I kid you not the description offered to us in the mini guide read as follows:

"The only Pakistani zombie slasher flick you're likely to see in this lifetime, HELL'S GROUND is a low-budget cult mayhem from first gory frame to last. Co-written and directed by a local ice-cream mogul with a deep appreciation for 1970s genre classics, it sends a group of slacker teens down an isolated road populated by wild-eyed maniacs, pollution spawned midget zombies, and a burqa-wearing superkiller."

It was everything I thought it could be and more, somehow. Such epic fail that it was the win.
