Pool Filter question

Wow, pretty neat concept.

My guess is that this unit ionizes salt (NaCl) into sodium and chlorine. The chlorine then oxidizes the little nasties you have in your pool. Since ionized chlorine is highly reactive, this all occurs in the proximity of the electrode in the unit. Therefore, no free chlorine in the pool. It makes chemical sense....whether or not it works...don’t know.

I’d be curious to know what happens to pH and scale buildup.

I have a hole-in-the-ground and have been using di-chlor and tri-chlor for years. Use an automatic chlorinator and have been very happy with the way this works. Really don’t have a chlorine smell (that I can smell) and water is always crystal clear (except when I had a case of black algae). I think the reason is that the chlorine is tied up in the chloramine complex...unlike HTH (sodium hypochloride).

I’m now also curious if anyone has experience with these units.

Editied: ooops, my fault. didnt realize that the system broke down salt. Thought it just used salt as a cleanser. Um... forget I said anything.

One more point...you titled this "pool filter"...this is not a filter. It is a sanitizer to give it a name. It does not filter anything that I can tell. Note I did not read anything so I say this with what I surmise from the picture.

your right---it deoesnt filter anything---this unit is put in-line right before the filter----so your still pumping water thru the filter to clean out the crap---i was at the pool place the other day to buy chlorine tablets and was talking to the guys there---they said this system has been around for a while---but now with the cost of chlorine up---last year i paid $65-$75 and a big bucket with the 3 inch tabs---that same bucket is now $95---
they also said that the unit for my size pool--20x40 in ground---40,000gallons would run about $1200---and every 5 years you have to change the cartridge--which is about $500---
you will have a salt water pool if you change over---but nothing like you think---the water doesnt taste salty
no longer have to use chlorine---

i just opened my monster today---with the mesh cover, water is green---after 6 one 1b. bags of shock---water starting to clear already---now the fun starts--- vacuuming up the crap on the bottom
