Propane generator deals

There are a whole bunch of benefits to propane. However, the one major disadvantage is the cost of fuel. I had heard that someone went through $700 of propane with Sandy. Generator is inexpensive, but the fuel is the killer.

Might wish to consider a generator with a multi-fuel carburetor.....able to run gasoline, propane or natural gas.

I figured that, but for some people who keep propane around and are worried about not getting gas if there is a power outage it makes sense.

Would you be able to hook one of these up to your natural gas line for the house? That fuel is much cheaper than the typical 20lb bottles you get filled up.... plus it's virtually an endless supply.

You would have to change out the pressure regulator and the metering valve. You'd also have to watch the fuel adjustment to make sure you are running a little rich. If natural gas or propane engines run lean, they will burn out the valves.

Go diesel ,off road diesel is cheap . The unit itself is a bigger investment upfront but run forever and sip fuel.

Not true Paul, I have a propane generator and it was used for 11 days post sandy. Try pitching all freezer, fridge foods. Now buy them all again. I'm thinking (non bachelor, where beer is the only item) 600-700$ in product......your fuel cost. The benefit; no shopping, continue as-is and when the power goes out, all I have to do is count to 30. My fuel cost for Sandy was 340$, not bad. However, I did do load shedding at night ( manually do a system shut down) and restart in the AM. At 45 where power goes out yearly to require food pitching, nothing beats my generator. If I had natural gas life would be great but that's not the case. My benefit....an 18KW generator on nat gas is a 20KW generator on propane. Just my 2 cents.

I believe Sears has a tri-fuel model that you can use propane, natural or gasoline. You'd be pretty much covered with that one.

They make tri-fuel carbs for most brands of generators. When I find the money for one ill most likely put one on it. Would be nice to have the options especially if gas stations don't have power or there are long lines like after sandy.

Just remember you get what you pay for , the 8000 watt rated pep boys $349 special that might last a year , vs Honda but you will pay ten fold for a machine that will last reliably for, many years. Currently putting a 2 1/2 car addition on the house and once that's done a diesel is going to be replacing the Honda. Or you could by a Hobart ,miller, gas drive welder and use it as a generator also

I wished My generator used natural gas during sandy, it was the only thing that I had plenty of at the time. :)

+1 They actually make dual or tri fuel conversion kits from approximately 100 to 200 shekels.

Here is my take on the price/quality of generator you purchase.....it is exactly the same thought I have on the purchase of power tools. I purchase tools to the expected use of the tool.....infrequently used, Harbor Freight.....used with frequency, Dewalt, or some other qualtiy brand.

I have a 300 dollar generator, and couldn't be happier. It paid for itself in just the food in the refrigerator during Sandy. I rarely (never) lose power. My generator was still in the box when Sandy hit. I knew it would be used infrequently. It ran flawlessly for the seven plus days we were out of power. And yes, I siphoned gas from my cars to keep it running the first four days. I will most likely never use it again, even though it sits in a dedicated little shed with all the fixings. And I am confident that the WD40 spray down will allow that little generator to start back up again on the first of second pull if and when it is needed again.
