Question about coral QT

Hey everyone, so I'm wondering if any of you quarantine your coral and if so whats the process ? I'm newer to reefing but I've been fish keeping for years now. I always QT my fish since I have a blue tang that seems to be extremely ich prone, but now that I'm starting to get into coral I'm wondering if majority of you do QT your corals or if you just dip them and throw them in. Currently I have been quarantining coral but to be honest its kind of an annoying process because I'd rather just get them in my display rather then waiting 2 months before moving them in.

I don’t. If you have the time space and money for a second reef tank, it is the best practice bar none. Unfortunately not practical for most. It wouldn’t be something you can just through together with the stuff you have laying around in the attic, like a fish quarantine. I have the utmost respect for the reefers that take the care to do this, but I doubt you’ll find the majority do.

All your corals should be dipped.

I remove all corals from plugs and rocks if possible . I dip corals in Coral Rx because the solution is clear and makes it easy to inspect the solution for pests. Followed by rinse in saltwater bucket #1. Next the coral is dipped into Bayer Advance, and rinsed in saltwater bucket #2. Place coral in QT for 8-12 weeks.

No QT for me. I thoroughly inspect the frag under a bright light with a magnifine glass (to look for any eggs- coral dips don't kill the eggs). Corals get dipped in a clear container with tank water and coral RX. I baste the frag using a cheap dollar store Turkey baster to see what falls off. I'll cut off the plug if possible and remount. Dip and rinse in another container of just my tank water. Put in tank. Again, coral dips DO NOT kill eggs.

Great question. QT definitely is best practice but like most others I don’t. I dip and then rinse in tank , and lately I’ve taken to a short freshwater dip as well (only one minute). I prefer to remove from frag plugs if possible.

Great info as usual. I never considered removing the frag from the plug. I guess it would be mainly applicable to stony coral? What are some of the techniques for removing coral from plugs without causing to much damage?

What are you looking for during the quarantine, hatched eggs so you can redip? And if so does that start the quarantine again?

I've read that frag plugs are an area that aiptasia often can be attached to. Technique depends on the type of coral (though not doing damage is not my specialty lol)
