Quick question about building a hood.

Alright i just though of something. Does the wood need to be covered in something so it doesn't get moldy from water slashing on it? Does it matter what i get? (I'd think there is something fish safe)

Thanks

Nick

saltwater is really corrosive so yes you do not want the wood to get moldy or worse, rot. As for what to apply - I'm going to leave that up to the experts here...

as an aside for my 55 i didn't apply anything and the wood doors to my stand started to show signs of corrosion from the bubbles/overflow in the sump.

I never had a whole lot of splash on the canopy but if you ever check out your bulbs, you'll see the residue. I typically take a wet paper towel and wipe the bulbs clean after they've cooled to get off any salt residue.

If it gets wet from the water splashing it would certainly not get moldy with all the salt that will be deposited on it ;D However, salt in itself with the presure from the water that got soaked into it will slowly degrade the wood.

Use polyurethane coating to prevent salt buildup inside the wood, and to make cleaning easier.

The inside of my canopy is painted with a high gloss white paint. Helps the light reflect as well as protects the wood from rotting with exposure to the water.

Make sure it is a quality paint and it is TOTALLY dry before putting on the tank. If it is not totally dry it will not last as long and it may peal off and that would not be good.
