Hey guys, I have noticed things are pretty quiet around here lately. I want to try and pick things up a little bit so here's my idea:

A contest to bring some more activity to the site. To be clear this has nothing to do with NJRC as a club just an idea from me. what I am proposing is a point based contest. Points will be awarded for new posts, starting a new thread, updating your Tale of The Tank thread, or if you dont have one creating a Tale of The Tank Thread for your tank. Posts in the "open water" and "deals and steals" forums will not count also only "meaningful posts" will be counted, for example simply posting "nice!" or "looks good!" dont count. Right now I am gauging interest as I don't want to do this if noone else is on board. I am also asking for possibly one other member to help me tally everything up. I would like to start this soon so that the winner can get their "prize" at the swap. I will offer up a few frags to the winner. I have a rough idea of the points already, but like I said I want to make sure people are actually interested. Also if you have any other ideas please feel free to post them. Let me know what you guys think.

Sounds like a good idea!

I have been on any forum much recently. Hopefully, that should be changing a little now.

Its always quiet in the summer time because people are out and about. Once fall and winter roll around we get more activity. It seems like it would be very complicated to keep track of all that data. Especially deciding whats a meaningful post and whats not.

I also started a thread of "spotlight coral of the week" 3 responses and no pics I think it's just the time of the year. It's like this every year I find myself on other forums a lot more around this time.
Kevin great idea by the way...

I know I'm not the first to say this but what about tank of the month no vote no contest each mouth someone volunteer to talk about their tank. No popularity contest know who's is better just someone volunteer to talk about their tank simple as that. I know this is like tale of the tank but there is a lot of people that don't have a tale of the tank myself included but would still like to talk about my tank

Ps Kevin thanks for the info you sent me
Great stuff

The tank of the month, without being a contest sounds great. I'd love to hear and see some of the history about some of the owners and tanks. Especially equipment, philosophy, etc.

While I understand things slow down in the summer, you guys have to admit it's been dead around here lately. I too go on different forums and none are nearly as slow as we are. Glad to see some interest in this and I will iron out the details after work.

I also love the idea if a tank of the month. Maybe a committee can be put together to figure out a way to implement this. I think a set list of questions and info should be put together and then the person who is being "spotlighted" would answer these and also add their own personal facts, info, etc as they see fit.

I think being a smaller closer knit group you tend to have a bigger hit when a half dozen forum members are gone. Think the swap after the summer is done is good because it drags people back in.

I think this is a good idea, but going to be a lot of work. You really need a team of people to track posts and such.

Also, remember...this forum is slower than others because we are a local group, not national.

Sorry I didn't think trying to bring a little more activity to the site was beating a dead horse. I'll keep my ideas to my self from now on.

Kevin,
First off, really happy to see you take an interest in, well.... sparking interest! :encouragement:

I saw your PM about this yesterday but read it as I was leaving work and didn't have time to respond. Then I sort of forgot about it until I saw this thread.

I love the idea of having a contest based on participation, but as a few others have noted, I agree it will be difficult to track. Especially when you start setting limitations on what's acceptable and what's not. Also, assigning different points for different types of posts adds to the work.

I'm not saying it can't be done or that it shouldn't. I'm just saying you will need to check out each participant individually and then go through all of their posts manually to do the point assignment. I don't think you can just subtract post count totals to easily get the results.

The easiest way to do this would be to left-click on their screen name, and then left-click on "View Form Posts" on the little popup menu. (You can also right-click on "View Forum Posts" and then "Open in a new Tab" if you want too.) That will show you all of that persons recent posts in one list and give you the first couple lines of the post, which will help eliminate the "+1" and other types of short comments that you want to ignore for the contest.

Now that you have a list of all of their posts, you can make yourself a little chart to keep track. I'd suggest including: Username / Date / Classification or Point Value / Total. (Or just total up the point value column at the bottom.) Then go through their post list and fill out your chart, recording only those that you think should count. If you need to figure out which forum the post is in (ie. if you want to eliminate sales/buys posts or if you want to give extra points for TOTT threads or whatever) you can open each post via the link and see what forum it's in.

Anyway, that might help you get this rolling Kevin.
