Quieting megaflow

So I have finally had enough of the noise. I gotta find a way to quiet this thing down. It gurgles at the top and I can see and hear surging at times. If I cut back the flow from the pump it quiets it down, but then the flow is non existent. I have read up on this and it seems like a normal issue with the AGA megaflow. Any tips on how I can quiet this down, without sacrificing flow through the sump. Thanks in advance.

How many holes do you have in your overflow? Can you do a Herbie setup? I setup one on my tank a few months ago and it is pretty quiet when dialed in.

Have you tried adjusting your durso, up or down? What kind of plumbing do you have going into the sump?

I've tried adjusting it but it dosent seem to work. Going to the sump is flexible hose. Is it possible that not enough air is coming in?

Maybe I'm pushing to much water. I just saw that the megaflow is only able to handle 600gpm. It just seems like when I dial down flow is very low.

As for the Herbie. That is where you use both the drain and return as drains and use seperate returns right.

With a Herbie you have a siphon that handles all the flow. You also have a second drain that is taller than the siphon. It just acts as an emergency drain to keep the tank from overflowing if the siphon gets clogged or out of adjustment. There's a gate valve on the siphon line that you use to adjust the level in the overflow. Unless you have a third hole to work with your return would need to go over the rim of the tank.

Then there is the Bean Animal that adds another drain...

Well I pulled it out and cleaned it up some. I was pretty much sealed shut and I couldn't raise/lower it anymore. After replacing I raised it so the air hole was even with the lip on the top trim. At this point it is almost dead silent. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I am a couple of days late here, but I was going to suggest you clean it up. I have the same issue all of the time and I believe that I should have jumped up a size on my flex from the bulkhead going to my main line into the basement....It definitely gets worse when the hole Gets salt creep or algae though. I may be pushing too much water too and the funny thing is that overseas reefers use minimum over flow and we in the US push our overflows to the max!

Glad you got it to quiet down though. I live with mine and it doesn't bother me until we are watching movies or I have company!

Thanks Don, I'm not sure if it was cleaning the durso or raising it up that did the trick but since I did it I find myself going in there to see if its running or not.
